Burning EPROMS and CAPX questions.
« on: February 27, 2016, 01:48:30 PM »
I am wanting to burn some new game EPROMS for my PE+  The MRO-MXO are M27C256 and the data/game chips are M27C512.  My question is can I use the 27C512 for all?  Also, on the CAPX I understand that I need a special burner, thats not an option for me.  Does anyone have any of the adaptor boards that Big_D made? Want to sell me one?

Can probably use the 27c512 for all, I think the only real difference is pin 1 as far as the mpu board is concerned. Pin 1 is the A15 address line on the 25c512 and it is VPP (program pin) on the 27c256. If the mpu board normally has a high on pin 1 of the 27c256 socket then you will probably have to burn the bin file into the upper half of the 27c512 since the 27c512 chip will see that high on pin 1 and select the upper half. It won't hurt anything to try. To make it easier you could just burn the bin file into both the upper and lower halves of the 27c512, then you know it would work ok.

I believe the CAPX chip is a bipolar prom, like an 82s123 or 82s129 or similar. So any programmer that can handle them should work ok. Keep in mind that a lot of the PE+ game sets can use the same CAPX chip so sometimes you don't have to swap it out. I think BrianT has posted a great list of chip info about this. As an alternative, a couple of people have posted about making a little circuit board adapter that plugs into the CAPX socket and the little board has a socket for an easier to find and easier to program memory chip, but I don't remember the details. The small etched board was a pretty slick idea.

EDIT: found the CAPX adapter in the sticky notes, here:

I'm pretty green when it comes to burning roms, so not sure how to put anything in a specific area.

I have a Superpro 3000 programmer made by XELTEK that programs the CAPX chips.

Don't know if the company is still in business though.

Somewhere on this site is a list of what CAPX goes with what program chips.

PM me if you need a specific one, we have drawers of those chips we pulled out of boards.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

In that case I'd keep it simple and just buy the 27c256 chips that you need, they don't cost very much and you won't have to deal with the extra steps of using a 27c512 where a 27c256 is needed. A lot of people get eproms from EpromMan when they need several of them. And you can buy new ones from electronics parts places like Jameco and Mouser, and of course they are all over ebay.

http://www.epromman.com/

And it looks like Badbaud can hook you up with any CAPX proms you need.

Now about burning roms ect....

The best thing to do would be check eBay and search for Winbond W27C512 chips.  These are electronically erasable 27C512 chips, so you can program them, erase them and reprogram them at will and they are fairly cheap.  Even IGT used those chips on the PE+ platform.  Otherwise if you get standard EPROM chips and want to erase them then you'll also need a UV eraser.

Now let's talk generals, for the most part:

For Normal boards:
Programs are 64K and are programmed to 27C512 chips (some older one are 32K and use 27C256)
CG graphics roms are generally 32K and are programmed to 27C256

For Superboards:
Programs are always 64K and are programmed to 27C512
DATA roms are always 64K and are programmed to 27C512
CG graphics roms can be either size, 32K --> 27C256 or specialty 64K --> 27C512

Specialty games like Jackpot Poker, Wingboard and some international games use the larger 64K CG roms as an example.

So that leaves us with the CAP / CAPX chips.

Most modern readers/burners can read and write them.  Check your programmers device list and look for these chips:

 Philips N82S135N for CAP chips
 Philips N82S147N for CAPX chips
 AMD AM27S23 for CAP chips
 AMD AM27S29 for CAPX chips

Those are 20 pin BPROMs chips and the biggest problem is finding blank ones. Even on eBay they run $10+ each!  But then you can burn specific ones for your specific needs.

As far as EPROMs are concerned you can "usually" use any 27C512 to read or write 27C215 chips (same for 27C256). However, if you have an AMD AM27C512 it's best to use your programmer's specific AMD AM27C512 programming algorithm.  When reading chips it's not that important although your reader may complain that it doesn't match the ID info.

Now here is a silly question... Has anyone been successful in creating their own custom card backs? If so, what is the process?  My basement bar/arcade has it's own logo so might be cool to have cards match.

Sure, Stolistic from here has tools and even wrote some custom games like 3 card stud and 5 hand poker.  Check here:

http://www.stolistic.com/forum/index.php

Not much support but there should be enough info there to get you started.  However you must update the card backs in each individual CG set you make as required by the game.

Yep.  I think I have a screenshot somewhere around here...

Here we go.  This was my first attempt:

...I then refined it and wound up with this, which I liked a lot better:

To build on what BrianT was saying......

I have both S+ and PE+ games. A wide variety of 27C64, 27C256 and 27C512.
If you buy in bulk they get cheaper so I found it easiest to buy the 27C512.

When burning the smaller chips onto the bigger ones you need to use an offset....
The reason being is that chips are read from top down.

For instance if you had a 27C256 original and directly burned it to the 27C512 the contents would be from bottom of the memory map to only 1/2 way up the chip.
When used in the machine - it will begin to read the top 1/2 of the chip that is blank. Basically the machine would think the chip is blank-o....

If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.
