Title: Universal "Mustang" tilt & 62 code
Post by: satelliteman on January 17, 2017, 06:24:21 AM
I have a Universal Mustang slot that's been a reliable machine for a number of years.  Other than the strobe unit on the top of the machine ceasing to function a couple of years ago, it operates well.  Recently however, it has begun to "tilt" out for no apparent reason. Usually, I was able to push the yellow reset button & the machine would resume operation.  A couple of days ago, it tilted out again.  This time I was not able to get it going again.  I'm getting the tilt & 62 code.  I have tried the various reset procedures, holding one (or both) clear buttons down in the upper unit & powering up the machine, holding the buttons down for 5 (or 15) seconds, releasing the buttons, powering down, then holding the reset on the lower board down, powering up, holding down for 5 (or 15) seconds, releasing the buttons.  62 code won't clear.  I repeated this until my fingertips were numb.  I've checked the batteries (lower board battery reads 3.6V, upper board battery reads 3.9V).  Fuses are all good.  After doing the reset procedure, I've also tried pressing the yellow reset button.  If I quickly close the door, insert a coin & press the spin button, the machine will start to play normally.  However midway through its cycle, it will tilt out.  If I reset with the yellow button after doing the clear, then just wait, the 62 code goes away but returns after a number of seconds.  I also noticed, as I was working on the machine yesterday, that the LED display is not lit.  Any thoughts?

my first guess would be the 5vdc power supply in the top bonus unit. they go out often.  you can replace it with any 5vdc at 8 amp tupe open frame unit. you will have to modify the arrangement, cables, etc.   measure the pink wires coming from the power supply, it should be 5 vdc, this power supply runs three items, the top strobe bar, which has its own board located up in the left top corner,  the bonus unit, supplies 5vdc to run the logic board, and it supplies power to the top bonus LED board.

you have two options, try and repair the factory supply, or replace it.   I usually buy the power supply from Mouser.

hope this helps.

Replaced the 5V power supply today & the machine is now functional (after clearing the 62 code).  However, the strobe light still doesn't work.  I had hoped it would work after replacing the power supply.  Oh well....
Many thanks Jim for your help in getting the machine operational again.
