Bally S5500 Wheel 1 Improper Spin Error
« on: March 15, 2017, 04:18:56 PM »
I was just about to try and sell my Bally S5500 Black and White Double Jackpot machine and suddenly I started getting an error 41, wheel 1 improper spin.  I swapped the #1 wheel to the number 2 position and after several power up cycles the error switched to the #2 position.  The big question here is now what do I do?  Any hints would be greatly appreciated.  Geoffrey

It could be a couple of things.

1. A bad reel motor, you may need to purchase another one.
2. The reel hub that holds the reel strip is walking out if it's center post, shove it back in.
3. The reel optics is dirty and needs to be cleaned with some canned air.
4. The main MPU board needs to have another RAM clear.

Over the years I have ran into all of these problems.

Thanks for your prompt reply.  I did a full ram clear, cleaned the optics with canned air and looked at the hubs.  Post ram clear still got error 41.  Swapped reel 1 and 2, did another ram clear and still got an error 41.  Tried moving around all the reels and did multiple ram clears and after one of them got an error 40.  After all reels went back into their original position and did a final ram clear error 41 came back.  Starting to get rather nervous here that something bigger is going on.  Right after one of the resets reel 2 and 3 were spinning from the top down and reel 1 was spinning from the bottom up.  Any further ideas?

It's almost like you are not doing a complete

ram clear.
After clearing (seeing CHC then CLC on the display) do you put the jumper back on one pin then turn the machine on and leave the door open until the reels do a re - initialization and a 50 (door open) is seen on the door display?

I'm pretty sure I've done the ram clear correctly.  Placed jumper pin back on one post, turned machine on and let the wheels initialize and then closed door.  Machine accepts a coin but when I attempt a spin the sound starts to make its normal noise but the wheels turn slowly and don't stop until I power down.

Are you also holding in the TEST and PSEUDO COIN buttons when you turn on the game and seeing the CHC CLC response?

Yes, as per the instruction manual, I've held in both the test and pseudo coin buttons when doing the ram clear and have seen the proper CHC and CLC response.

Is the problem still following the same reel, wherever you put it?
That defect could cause the other reels to act funny.
In that case I would suspect a bad reel motor.
You could unplug the suspected reel assembly and send the whole thing to me so I can try it on our 5500 tester.

The machine acts up wherever the reel is installed however it seems to generate the 41 error where ever it is.  I also occasionally get a number 40 error.

A defective reel motor can cause a current drain on the DC power supply and randomly cause the other reels to act spastic.
If you send the suspect reel to me I can put it on our tester and watch my DC supply for fluctuations.
If that is the case I could sell you a used working replacement motor and mount it on your frame.
But you could post a WTB on this site and see if you could purchase a motor and see if it solves the problem.

To determine which reel motor to send to you should I trust the error 41 and send reel #1?  Perhaps I should send all 3?  I don't know how hot these motors are supposed to run but the reel 1 motor was warmer to the touch than I expected.  What is your diagnostic fee and if it is a bad motor, what would the cost be for a new one?

PM me for details. The bad motor should be harder to spin by hand. Does it feel "stiffer"?
\No need to send all 3.
