DBV 200 not working - needs to be enabled?
« on: April 16, 2017, 09:06:31 AM »
Don't worry about it, just a learning experience about your machine. Post a photo of your bill validator. It is probably a DBV-200 or possibly the older DBV-145. Both were made by a company called JCM and IGT used them on a lot of their machines from the S and S+ era. The DBV-200 has software updates available that will allow it to work with most of the new style bills in circulation now. So don't give up on getting the bv working. There are even good working used DBV-200 available for sale.

Below is what the DBV-200 looks like, on the bottom of it there is a circuit board that has a memory chip installed. This chip contains the DBV software that gets updated. If this chip is a normal eprom installed into a socket it is quite easy to replace. But sometimes the chip is soldered to the circuit board and that makes updating the software not as easy.

Post a photo of your bill validator and we can go from there. It should have a sticker on the top or side that gives information about it.

So, I have the DBV-200, and it looks like the chip is soldered to the board.

I have split this off into a new thread as we have gotten away from the original post that is marked Topic Solved.      Shaggy

I can flash the DBV200 but haven't done it several years. No new 5 or 100 firmware available from what I think I remember.

At this point I am not even getting lights on the bill validator, except the diagnostic lights on the board, no lights on duckbill or feed area. It does cycle at startup though. Not sure if I still do need to get the set/clear chip.

I'm also getting a 3100 error whenever I set it to cash and it pays out, always get an extra coin paid out, I guess I need to clean the sensors or check the break, according to the error code.

There is a way you can press the TEST button inside the machine and get into the setup menu. One of the menu settings will tell you if the bill validator is enable or disabled. If it is disabled you will need the SET chip to enable it. One of the folks here familiar with how this is done can give you the details.

Your photo shows the DBV dipswitches all set to OFF. I think this is correct, except I'm not sure about switch #10. A chart I saw said that dipswitch #10 OFF is for ID-023 and if it is set to ON it is for ID-022. You could try setting it to ON and then reinstall the DBV into machine, power up and see what happens. I think it should accept the $1 bill no matter how old your DBV software is since the $1 bill never got changed. The ID-022 and -023 is the communication method that the DBV uses to talk to the mpu board. Maybe it is possible your mpu uses ID-022, but others here can say for sure about that.

The 3100 error is a hopper coin error. It can happen if the coins that are paid out don't get counted correctly by the coin counter (an optic sensor or mechanical switch) or if there is a coin jam. Here is a helpful IGT S+ error code table:

melin99.....Let's stick with the DBV 200 issues and then start a new thread for the 3100 error. It gets too confusing for answers when we have 2 different topics running in the same post. Or start a second thread now and we can get answers to both questions at the same time in two different places. Thank you.

Sorry, I know, I'm a noob....

I'm gotten in the setup menus and from what I am read I am looking for 9-0 or 9-1, but I am getting confused with all the numbers. I see the coins played go up to 8 and then start over at 0 when I turn the key. I need to search the forums more for the correct sequence to get there correctly.

We've all done it when new. You just get better and more answers when each post stays specific. People who don't really know much or anything about DBV 200s, aren't going to look at that post to answer a question about a 3100 error. It actually works in your favor to have the new post. And you're not limited to the number of posts you have running. You'll get the hang of it.   :cool_thumb_up:

Do you know what the SP or game chip number is that's in your machine. If you don't know, you can open the door turn the machine on and push the white test button until the number 4 shows in the coins played window. Then 2 sets of numbers will flash and one will be the SPchip and the other, the SS or reel chip. We can check to make sure you are looking at the right numbers.

If I keep pushing the test button to 9, it flashes 9 then 0, with 0   0, which I think means that I need the set chip to turn it on.

My thinking says you are right, a 9-1 means bv enabled, a 9-0 means disabled.

So if I am reading the list of codes right, 1271 is the SP chip that I have and in the list of chips it shows this

SP1271 Type 0,1,4,5,19 10MHz, ID023, SET088/89/90/91/101/102/116/121 $0.01/0.05, 9 Paylines - SAS EFT - does NOT support SAS Bonusing

This machine doesn't have 9 paylines, it only has one, though it does have a jump feature where if certain bars show below the payline, it jumps to the payline.

Is this the right one? Does that mean I can use any of those set chips listed?

Your Louisiana Louie machine is a Type 5 (nudging) game.  The "9 Paylines" part of the SP chip listing just indicates that the SP chip supports up to 9 paylines -- earlier SP chips did not.  SP1271 is a great chip for your single line game.

Yes, you can use any of the listed SET chips to enable the bill validator.  SET090 is a pretty common one and should be easy to find, and will do everything you'll need in a home environment.  A SET015 will likely work, too, but I'd go for a SET090 if given the choice.

I can flash the DBV200 but haven't done it several years. No new 5 or 100 firmware available from what I think I remember.

So I have seen where I could order a newer chip. My board looks to have a newer style soldered on chip, but the holes are there for the other bigger chip. I could remove this chip and order a new chip, or a socket and chip, and replace what is there too right.

If you do flash the dbv it will only be as good as the next money change.

Many people leave their home machines setup for 0.25 or $1 but set their dbv for 1c.
This way when you put in a $1 bill you get 100 credits. Plenty for home use.

I may not mess with the chip. I guess if they ever change the 1$ bill then we are all hosed. Nobody has figured out how to get their hands on the code to update it further, or does anyone make a different head that has been updated?

The DBV200, WBA11/12/13 have all been updated for other protocols.
The S+ is protocol 22/23 and IGT stopped paying for JCM to create new code for this protocol.

http://am-en.jcmglobal.com/support/downloads/software-protocols/

I have in the past found a protocol convertor which would allow you to use a validator designed for the S2000 (24 ??) and have that send the necessary information to the S+ in 22 format. The guy that posted the YouTube Video about this never did reply to my email.

Since your machine uses ID-023 this might be of interest to you. This DBV-200 eprom updates the DBV-200 to accept most but not all current bills. You could buy a good working DBV-200 that has an eprom socket, then install this chip into it. Or possibly mod your DBV to remove that flash rom and install a socket and this eprom. Or contact Ken and see how much it would cost you to get your DBV-200 flashed to the latest software possible. I wouldn't be too worried about the US updating their paper money for quite a while, there have been no announcements about doing that, and the wheels of gov't move slowly.

I found this site that says they have a chip that supports the new 5$ bill. Several people have said that this didn't exist.
