I found this site that says they have a chip that supports the new 5$ bill. Several people have said that this didn't exist.

http://www.8linesupply.com/p/jcm-dbv-200-sh-new-5-currency-update.html

Keep in mind that the software has to be ID-023 protocol for your machine. JCM DBV-200 bill validators are used in lots of different equipment, including bill breaker machines, arcade games, etc and each one uses whatever communication protocol (that's the ID-XXX) that the equipment mfr specifies. So this software update you found could be for something other than the ID-023 you need for your IGT S+ slot machine. You can contact them and ask if it is compatible with your IGT S+ slot machine, but don't assume it does unless they say it is.

Since your machine uses ID-023 this might be of interest to you. This DBV-200 eprom updates the DBV-200 to accept most but not all current bills. You could buy a good working DBV-200 that has an eprom socket, then install this chip into it. Or possibly mod your DBV to remove that flash rom and install a socket and this eprom. Or contact Ken and see how much it would cost you to get your DBV-200 flashed to latest software. I wouldn't be too worried about the US updating their paper money for quite a while, there have been no announcements about doing that, and the wheels of gov't move slowly.

http://jjslots.com/JCM-DBV-200-Upgrade-Chip-V261-ID023-IGT-dbv261.htm

I actually bought the Set90 chip from them this afternoon. I saw it. Still thinking about it. I can get the socket for .89 at Fry's, and that chip, or I can get someone to flash it for $15 and pay for shipping both ways.

There is an update for the $5 for protocol 23. It was a limited release for the overseas market.
It was not known to be in the wild.

Per my earlier post the DBV200 was updated for all new money for other protocols.

I would double check that it is for Protocol 23. If so that is cool. For $5 buy the chip and then find a DBV head that takes socketed chips.

Removing the flash chip from your DBV-200 and then soldering in a new socket is not impossible, it was written-up years ago on the old NLG site and some people did it. But it isn't what I'd call an easy project either. You'd need to be confident in your board working skill. It isn't likely that another newer software update will ever come out, so you could solder the eprom to the board without installing a socket. But as you say the cost of the socket is small. The difficult part of the mod is removing the flash chip without damaging the board.

Yeah, its definitely a concern. Changing the battery on the MPU was easy, but this is a bit more complicated. I would go the socket route to protect the chip. That way I am not putting heat on the chip.

Realistically, I'm sure you could obtain a working DBV-200 head that already has a socketed chip for fairly little money.  There isn't a huge demand for them these days.

I would suspect that the DBV upgrade being sold at the link you provided earlier is not the 022/023 protocol software, which is what is needed for your S+ machine.

Have you used the SET chip to enable your bill validator, and if so, does it work ok with a $1 bill?  You don't want to order a software update eprom or do other work to it if it isn't a good working unit. I would prove that the bv works or doesn't work with a $1 bill, then go from there.

It used to work, before the battery died and I replaced it. I ordered a set chip and am waiting for it to come in. I won't do anything else to it until I verify that it is still working.

Hopefully the SET chip will let you enable the dbv and it will work like it did before. Maybe the battery going dead caused the dbv to be disabled in the settings menu.

What bills did you use with it back when it was working? If it is still working now but needs new software I think the simplest thing to do is to send it out for flash software updating. After that you will likely never need to get it updated again, since there won't be any newer software released in the future that you could have installed. That's a lot less risky than soldering on the dbv circuit board yourself.  just my opinion...

When it was last in use it was unable to read any of the new colored money. The sticker on it says v2.40-04-03

Your DBV stopped working due to the 65-3 error.

When you got the error 12 (battery low) the cmos got corrupted.
There are two cmos chips. One on the mother board (fixed board that the May plugs into) and the other is on the MPU board (the removeable one). The two chips need to match. When you get a battery low for an extended period of time the cmos memory degrades due to low power.

When the new battery came in. You got the 65-3; when that is cleared one of the cmos' was basically reformatted. Subsequently the 61-1 came up which is the same error you get with a game change.

I am confident the SET chip will get the BV back to where it was.

Yes, it was probably about 4 years since it was used regularly and was sitting in the garage since I moved. I tried working on it about a year or so ago but didn't have the time to research the issues then. I've had it for almost 11 years. I'm not sure how old the battery was. It does have 04-04 on it, so I am not sure if that means April 2004. So, it was likely in a degraded state for some time. I'm sure the set chip will get it back to where it was. Whether I remove the flash chip and replace with eprom I'm not sure yet, but it would be nice.

So I got a set chip in. I ordered a set90 chip, and they sent me a set15 instead. It isn't what I ordered, but it should work to get the BV going. Anyway, I kind of expected it to come with instructions, but it didn't. I'm sure there are instructions in the download section, and I made a donation to the site but haven't been granted access yet. I know I have to pull a chip and replace it with this one, and then go to nine and enable the BV, and then save it, and then swap the chips again. But just want to make sure I don't miss anything. Anyone have instructions for using the chip?

Thanks. I searched the site for using set chip and couldn't find it. I was able to use the set15 chip and turn the bv back on, so now my machine is working as it was when I got it, in all respects. Thank you to everyone that has assisted me in this.

I haven't decided yet if I want to upgrade the bv to the latest code, but it is kind of limited being only able to read one dollar bills.

Did you see this posting for DBV-200 for S+ ? I think the 022/023 ver 2.60 software was the last or next to last update that was released, so it should work with several of the bills currently in circulation.

My Double Diamonds machine. Having issues with the DBV-200 bill acceptor. No light on the front of the machine and two red lights on the bill acceptor board. I have upgraded it and do have the set chip. After upgrading a several years ago and using the set chip, everything was working good. Then one day, the bill validator just quit lighting up and would not accept any form of bills.
