502 vs. 504
« on: January 28, 2015, 12:21:35 PM »
I read somewhere that the 504 board is better. What is the benefit? I have a few bad 502's and need spares, but want to find out about 504. I am guessing that a 504 will work with Vision platform also?

The 504 has far less noise in the sound output, that is mainly the reason people shift over to that.  I prefer the enhanced board, they have no noise at all, but it requires a backplane change.

Thanks Rick. I was hoping there was some difference with the traces under that darned green battery. I have one 502 that will not allow the key switch to work. Turning the key does nothing. Drove me crazy because I thought the switch was bad.

If you installed a 504 board in a Vision machine,I wouldn't think it would make any difference because the game/ sound comes from the monitor,The advantage of a 504 board when used with a amp is less static than a 502 board.

I know the traces under the green battery are related to door open/close signals, but have never heard of them interfering with key switch operation.

It is the only board I have that will not accept the key switch command. It came in the machine when I got it. Game was missing parts so I never saw it work and I turned it into a 3 reel. Put it in another game also without luck. I wonder what could possibly keep the board from seeing key turn? I even did a clear. Probably a dumb question, does the clear do the MPU or the Mother board? I assume it's the memory on the MPU

NVRAM in MPU, EEPROM in motherboard.

Look along the front edge of the board for an IGT number. Like 7551502, 7551504. It will be under the MML/sound board (in the corner). The MML board just pops off, just lift up on one of the corners gently and it will unplug from the socket. You won't hurt anything or have to re-do any settings.

That's a 504 Rev B identifiable by the Model 1952-2 label visible in your pic. 502 boards will be 1952-0.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

The most obvious difference between the 500 series and the 1270 enhanced series is battery placement. The 500 series places the cmos battery close to the corner of the board with the 3 cell green battery on the same end but toward the other side, like the picture above. The 1270 series place the cmos battery, always a slide in, in the upper center of the board and the 3 cell green battery will be to the end edge underneath the legacy adapter or R board. As far as the difference between a 504B and all other 500 series boards, the 504B is the only one with black expansion ports running along the sides of the chip sockets, all others have white.

Is it possible to switch a 1270 enhanced series to one of the 500 series, easily? Or will things not fit?

1270 board requires a different backplane.

I'm having trouble getting my S2000 to work properly, keep getting a coin jam error on startup.  It's got a 504 board currently, I have a 502 in my spare parts.  Can I just swap the chips from the 504 to the 502 and will everything work properly or is there more to it?  If its simple enough I figured I could rule out the board as the issue this way.  Thanks! Brad
