voltage/power supply for IGT oval topper
« on: July 04, 2015, 01:20:25 AM »
I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but I couldn't find specifics. What is the voltage needed for the LED ring part of an IGT topper. I saw that 12v seems to be the answer, but I vaguely remember that if can be 9v? The reason I ask is that I have used a 9v battery to check out the function of the ring and it works fine. I'm going to be putting a couple of toppers on S+ machines and to the best of my knowledge there is no power supply for the LED ring. I have a couple of 9v 100ma power supplies and wanted to use them, but don't want to let the smoke out. Long story short can I use the 9v power supply for the ring? Thanks.

Chris

Yeah it's supposed to be 12v.  Normally the topper has the connector that clips right in to the small power distribution board in the top box if you have the right machine.  I'm pretty sure you could run it with the 9v power supply though.  It might be slightly dimmer if it's a direct input (I can't remember if it is).  Either way if you get lights you should be fine.  Those don't pull much power either so you don't even need a high amp power source.

I have a couple of postings below about a retro fit I did that worked great. I assume your machine won't be in a bright place and probably won't need max brightness anyway, whatever that is. For mine I used a 6 volt supply which measured 8 volts without a load and it is very bright. The led ring won't take a lot so be careful. All the power supplies have a slightly higher voltage than stamped.

The LED ring is 13V, fluorescent 25V, candle 13V. The 4 pin molex is red 13V+, black/red 13V-, orange 25V+, black/orange 25V-.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

Again be careful. If you are planning on using a cheap transformer that may have charged other devices and it is stamped 12 volts, it may have a 17 or 18 volt output. All of mine did that I checked and I have a big box of them. The 13+ volts that the machine outputs for a topper led ring, I assume is regulated and will not exceed 13 volts. To be safe I would use a lower voltage. I'm not sure if the leds light any brighter at 9 volts than 13 volts anyway.
