Title: Reel Touch Top Monitor Black on Startup
Post by: JDKMunch on October 10, 2016, 06:25:19 PM
after a few months i turned on my reel touch

no top display at all until windows started to boot

after turning her on and off for a few days the top display became visible but didn't look right

I replaced the RAM and the thing looks ok and booted ok -

Could this be the power supply or could it be the top box?

Probably not the power supply. I have found just reseating the RAM chips and plugs in the top box will usually restore the unit to a working condition. Just be careful the boxes are basically 13 plus year old PCs.  plugs and wires become brittle.

This is good news to me -

I have many spare parts but not a top box power supply.    She's running now  - RAM replaced and it is on now fine.

However - I did have to replace the ram simms - which has me stunned that a SIMM would die while off.

The RAM on the failed start was 256 -

if I changed simm 1 and simm 2 it dropped to 128

I replaced it with different simms and it booted to 512

Are you sure the ram went bad, usually cleaning the contacts easily with a pencil eraser fixes them up. I have never had them go bad.
Power supply is the easiest of all. You just need an old ATX power supply and the small harness from the old fried supply and you are back in business for under $20. Check the sticky on this topic.

I've done nothing with the power supply yet -

as for the RAM each stick was removed, swapped and re-insetted
new RAM brought me up to 512

and as a note this machine has been mine for 10 years

Wow I guess the RAM stick went bad.
Don't do anything to the power supply. I was just saying if it goes bad it's an easy and affordable fix.
I see it's a Denver Duck great game!!
