Title: Burnt Capacitor in my Vision top box
Post by: JDKMunch on June 29, 2014, 01:59:44 PM
How worried should I be about this ??? ?  This photo is from my vision top box right above the molex on the top right.

Look at C17 and should there be one at C15??

I've had the machine for 5 or so years with the board exactly like this..
however It holds huge sentimental value to me and I want to keep it for a long time.

I am guessing it is your sound board. That is the only board I have in top box on right. Just looked at the picture again and don't think sound board. Is it wired to anything?

The picture is from the top box LCD.

It's located above molex on the top right

Your pic was so close up. It is definitely your sound board. Has power plug, sound input, and speaker output. Easy to get. Contact Raz410 or CVslots Ros. Be sure to give me first rights to the pinball glass.

I think IDESIGN would be able to help you with this one. He is the vision expert.
Looks like a ceramic capacitor meltdown.  :burningresistor:
Maybe they jumpstart the screen at startup. Just an uneducated wild guess.

Some of these monitors have light rings around then. But I am guessing it is for and additional serial cable that some visions have.

I've seen the light rings around a reel touch machines but never a vision

My Pink Panther has pink and Ms. Little Green Men has green one. I'm wondering what those resistors do, since your machine works. I've changed the battery and the invertor board on vision. I have 1 that is dead and it was not the invertor. Never got around to trying to figure it out. I have a couple spare invertors for future use. The LS520 was hard to find and expensive.

I'm going to snap a better photo and try to get a read on them -  someone told me that they were fuses

but I don't know.

This is your working monitor right? If yes, I'd put it back together and not mess with it. I will take one of mine apart to see tomorrow.

Here are the little buggers

I've learned they are D-Case Tantalum Capacitors

Found them!

The F+ means industrial grade with a fail safe fuse.

This is a 10 microfarad 20 volt cap.  Mine was made in the 30th week of 1997

Great information!  Did you ever find out if C15 should be populated?  I looked through my manuals, and I have no documentation at all on the Vision top box CPU board.

I had a buddy of mine look at the back of their monitor and C15 is NOT populated.

So this is good news for me.  I'm going to replace the bad cap and hopefully enjoy this monitor for many years to come.

Moderator note: I changed your Subject matter from "Pop goes the Weasel !!!!!!!!!" to Burnt Capacitor in my Vision top
board for future reference. (Good posts)

What do they control? Since it was blown and still working.

My Guess would be that they are just filter caps in a power supply circuit.  The capacitor may have just broken down and shorted, causing it to explode apart and open the circuit.
If they are just filter caps with one side grounded, then the fact that the bad one is out of circuit would not cause any noticeable malfunction in the operation.
Again this is just a Guess since I have no documentation to prove it.

I have some sound issues  - -  If I have the sound level down to 4 or 5 it will stop from the LCD until I move the sound level up.  If I keep the LCD volume on 10 it seems to stay on all the time.

I don't know if the two issues are related
