CEI casino poker with 906 III non turbo problems
« on: January 24, 2017, 05:43:07 PM »
I have a CEI casino poker with a 906 III non turbo pcb in it,    It was working just fine for weeks,   Now I get nothing on the screen, but the monitor checks out fine and is powering up,  the red led on the 906 III pcb does not light up is the only thing I notice may be wrong.  Does anybody have a schematic or manual for this model,  and do you know what I should be checking.   I have test equipment.   Thanks for any help..

Can you post a good picture of the MPU?
I would start by checking all the IC's to make sure they're seated properly, as well as the main plug in back. Have you measured the battery voltage? Also, does the game play as it is, without a picture?

Have you measured the 3 or 4 power supply voltages? They need to be working. I think there are other threads or sticky notes here that cover this. I think all of the power supply voltages can be measured on the backplane motherboard, they have little wire loops for connecting a meter to measure the voltages, and near the loops is written what each one is for.

This unit has a 911 mother board,  no loops to test,  All the green leds light up when I power it on,   and on the low voltage sense circuit I am getting 17 volts ac?    If you know where I should test the remaining voltages,  I will test them asap.

Hey guys,   I took out the back motherboard,  cleaned connections and solders up,  tested everything,   reassembled,   powered unit on,  and after 2 minutes,  I get a blue screen that says - Please Stand By System test in progress - but it is blinking every second and not doing anything else???????????

Did you test the button battery voltage on the MPU? I just want to rule it out. And did you look REALLY close to make sure all the IC legs are in their sockets? I've had machines work for years with a squished leg only to eventually lose contact.

Another thing to watch for, these old circuit boards are famous for cracked solder joints where the male connector pins are soldered to the board, see photo below. Check all connector pins like this and resolder as needed. And if the male pins are tarnished and need buffing to make shiny the mating female contacts are likely in the same condition. All of this can be the source of intermittent operation, along with tarnished socket contacts and tarnished eprom legs.

You have likely already done it, but I'd recommend you read thru all of the discussion thread in the CEI/Omega forum. There is a lot of info, photos and suggestions on what to check, how to do it and common problems.

Here is link to the CEI/Omega forum on NLG:

and here it is on the old NLG archive site:

There isn't a lot of documentation on the Cal Omega/CEI machines that I have seen. But here is a put-together photo of a version of the 911 motherboard, it may be similar enough to what you have in some areas to be of some help.

I put a new battery holder in and a new CR2032,  holding at 3.2 volts,  I removed all socketed IC's and cleaned -straightened legs, inspected sockets ( some sockets are the old style sockets?)   and powered it on, nothing on the screen now.

Have you checked all fuses? Make sure fuse holder is tight. Since it was working fine a short time ago the problem could just be a flaky connection somewhere. Was the machine moved recently?

If you can verify 4 voltages and 1 adjustment there is nothing other than the game board keeping your game from working.  On a 906 board
measure regulated   5 at one of the bypass capacitors like C 38 - 45, regulated  12 volts at  R17 end nearest U50 (negative lead still attached to bypass capacitor used to test  5),   12 volts unregulated  measure across C4, 12 -15 volts AC across CR8.  Check R41 is turned clockwise max. The battery voltage does not matter, game board will work without a battery.

Not Getting the 5 volts at any of the bypass caps,   I did find a bad ptcfuse at CR6,  changed it and unit tried to come on for a minute,  but screen was a little garbled and kept flashing back to test screen,  now nothing, just blank screen??

With board unpluged from the machine does the 5 volt LED light?  If yes you have a short on your board, look closely at the bypass capacitors, if any are cracked remove them.

the 5 volt led (green one) lights up all the time along with the other leds on the rear mother board,   however not getting a voltage reading at any of the bypass capacitors that are accessible near the front of the pcb board??  Is there any other common problems I should be checking on these 906III boards?

CR6 is a MOV (looks like a PTC) on the AC input used for reset.  You can remove CR6 and board will work as it is used as a filter for voltage spikes on the AC input.  Seems like your number one problem  is why +5 volts is OK on the mother board and absent on the game board.  If any of the 4 voltages (+5,+12 regulated, +12 unregulated and 15 volts AC)are absent your game is dead.
