Is it okay to wash Hopper Parts in hot soapy water?
« on: November 16, 2017, 01:58:06 PM »
S+

I got a wild hair up my you-know-what and decided to tear the hopper apart and clean it up really good the thing that I am finding is the plate that carries the quarters up to the coin out optic is extremely dirty I have been using alcohol wipes but it appears it needs a good scrubbing is it okay to put it in hot soapy water? I know it is metal probably steel since a Magnet sticks to it but just wondering.

A friend of mine's child likes to play the machine but both times that he has played it with quarters he has developed a rash on his hands and his eyes get really irritated. But yet always before when he played my electrical mechanical machine there was no problems. I've got the quarters soaking in hot soapy water.  but it will do no good to wash the quarters if I don't clean the hopper.

Just make sure you dry it thoroughly

I would clean the coin bowl too. I would take a wire brush to that coin wheel. They like to get dirt built up around the raised notches, used to pick up the coins, and when that happens the coins tend to fall back into the bowl before they reach the hopper knife.

If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

I actually thought about that but was afraid it would be too harsh. So I used 14 toothpicks instead.  cannot believe how much grime I got off of it!

Wire brush won't hurt the coin wheel. Just remember there are steel coins grinding and flipping around in the hopper every time the hopper runs.

A bead blast cabinet works wonders on those if you have access to one.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

Could the child have picked up casino nicotine/grime from the ball on the pull handle and from the pushbuttons or other surfaces of the machine? All the years in a casino can put a lot of residue on things. Kids love to touch everything and some kids are more sensitive to stuff than adults are. In the old days people playing with coins sometimes wore thin cotton gloves, mainly to keep their hands clean from handling the coins but it also may have helped with allergies, although when you were sitting in a smoky casino gloves didn't do anything for that. Even though the machine is in a clean home it could still transfer some old nicotine crud to the little hands. You can wipe down the cabinet with a white paper towel and some household cleaner and see if the paper towel shows anything. If there is a yellowish stain that's most likely nicotine.
