Model: Frogger
Symptom: screen full of cherries

Board died on the bench. Replaced a bad crystal as the legs had rotted away from the body. Replaced 1 bad Character ROM, 1 bad Object RAM, 1 bad Video RAM, and 1 bad main RAM. Tested. No inputs and no audio. Replaced bad 7400 at IC41 on the sound board as it was chattering on output and constantly resetting the 8255 I/O chip. Fabbed a remote volume control but still no audio. Replaced 1 bad ROM with rotted legs, bad Z80 CPU socket, and a dead Fujitsu 7442 4 to 10 decoder IC. Tested successfully.

Model: Frogger
Symptom: No sound

Sound CPU was crashing and /INT was stuck low. Replaced bad socket on the Z80 CPU. The /RFSH signal wasn't getting to the 74LS04 at IC25. This was causing the wrong signals to be sent to the /CS line on the 2114 RAMs at IC30 and IC31. Tested, no audio. Replaced bad M51516L audio amplifier IC and retested.

Model: Frogger
Symtpom: Boots to screen full of Xs

Inserted the Frogger Test ROM and it would not boot. Checked the Program RAMs and they were OK. Checked the 74LS138 decoders and found a dead pin on the one at IC16. Replaced the IC and tested.

Model: Frogger
Symtpom: Incorrect colors - missing green

Board was missing green and reds showed up as gray during attract mode.

Replaced bad 74LS20 at IC36 and tested. IC had outputs, but didn't match the inputs as shown when testing with an HP 10529A logic comparator.

Model: Bank Panic
Symptom: Dead. Missing CPU and has capacitor leak damage

It had some VERY nasty, swollen capacitors that leaked and left a white-ish brown crusty material on the board. Removed 4 220uf, 5 100uf, and 1 47uf @ 16v capacitors then cleaned and dried the board. Next, cleaned the edge connector with a fiberglass pencil, installed new caps, and checked where the power (pin 11) and ground (pin 29) connections were on the missing CPU's socket. They were right for a Z80 so one was installed.

Built a JAMMA adapter, plugged the board in, and tested all the functions.

Model: Choplifter
Symptom: Dead, missing parts.

Reinstalled 2 missing Z80 CPUs. Board would boot to the IC CHECK screen then fail on IC38 (Palette RAM) with the IC CHECK text flickering and with garbage outside the screen area where it should be hidden by Horizontal Blank signals. Replaced bad 74LS27 at IC28 that had floating outputs. No change. Replaced bad 74LS109 at IC48 with weak chattering outputs to fix the garbage during Horizontal Blanking and the flickering of the IC CHECK text. Replaced bad 74LS174 connected to the Palette RAM to fix stuck address lines causing the IC38 error. Tested.

Symptom: IC38 Error

Replaced 74LS245 at IC30 and a 74LS174 at IC54 which had a dead output. Board would boot but had a white background behind "IC CHECK" and minor graphics glitches. Replaced bad 74LS153 at IC 52 and tested.

Model: Choplifter
Symptom: No sync

Removed a solder blob from a bridge point, repaired a cut trace, and replaced the 74LS04 at IC48 to fix the sync issue. Board was stuck at "IC38" error. Replaced multiple bad Fujitsu 74LS153 chips at IC52, IC61, and IC161 with dead outputs. Board would then boot and play but had missing text and lines in background images. The sky was also the wrong color and the words "IC" and "CHECK" had white backgrounds (but not the space between the words.) Replaced bad custom IC 315-5025 at IC13 and tested.

Model: Choplifter
Symptom: Dead

Board had severe Fujitsu logic rot.

Dead Choplifter. Stuck reset. Replaced 2x 7404 and the 74LS192 in the reset circuit and then had /reset. Dead Choplifter. Replaced a bad 74LS244 on the CPU address lines. CPU was alive, but no video.

Replaced a bad 74LS157, 1 74LS161, 1 74LS139,  3 74LS109, and a 74LS00 to get clocks and control signals back. No video. Replaced 4 74LS174, 5 74LS153, 3 74LS157, 1x 74LS377, and 4 74LS273 to get the video back with text of CCCCKKKK instead of IC CHECK.

Let the IC check run and had an error message but it showed up as 99999999. Replaced a bad 74LS245 to resolve that one (IC 39 error) only to receive a 22222222 error. Replaced 2 74LS245, 1 74LS244, 1 74LS367 to clean up the garbage on the screen, but still had the 22222222 error. Replaced bad RAM at IC2 to fix that.

Next, the board showed IC CHECK and all checks passed, but all the sprites are drawn as scrambled horizontal lines on the left side and the middle of the screen. Replaced 2x 74LS245 chips connecting to the Sprite RAM to resolve that. Tested.

Model: WWF Royal Rumble (Naomi cartridge)
Symptom: Locks up

Cart test showed all ROMs bad. Replaced three 74LCX16245 SMT bi-directional buffer chips and tested.

Note: These chips are 3.3v with "5v tolerant inputs" and are easily damaged by over voltage. A Naomi game system should NEVER be run with more than 5.1 volts going to it.

Model: Naomi
Symptom: IC29 BAD

Removed multiple 18ga jumper wires from between the BIOS ROM and IC29. Removed the 8 pin EEPROM socket, BIOS ROM socket and the leaking supercap. Cleaned that area of the PCB to remove corrosive electrolyte from the supercap. Patched 5 address line traces to IC29, one signal trace to the 74LS157 next to it, and patched multiple dead ground traces on the 74LS157. Installed new 8 pin and 42 pin sockets. Reinstalled the BIOS ROM. Cleaned corroded pins on the 8 pin EEPROM and reinstalled it. Installed a customer supplied supercap and a new coin cell battery. Tested.
