Bally Alpha S9000 Black Gold Progressive Boot problem
« on: October 15, 2017, 12:27:45 PM »
I have had this machine for approx 6 months. I never had a problem with it until today. I saw a message about NVRAM Bat2Low. Then after that, it just hung on the call attendant message. I changed battery, now it seems worse. I don't see the NVRAM message, but it won't finish booting now. I noticed the first time I booted after changing the battery, the bios message Press F2 to enter setup stayed longer than usual, approx 5 seconds or so then continued booting. One question I have is, does something need to be changed in the bios settings since I removed the battery and replaced it? Theres actually 2 batteries right next to each other next to the bios, I only changed the one marked 2. Not even sure if that is for the NVRAM message or not, maybe I f'd things up pulling that battery out, reset bios? I know there is another battery on the backplane as well, but that one checks good. I posted a picture of where it stops booting now.

I'm not a Bally person but I think it's related to the OS or Game card. I would try another OS card first.

Maybe you need to re-install the software and set the game up?  That always happens to me after a battery change in an Alpha.

Before you go any further, I would highly recommend that you replace all the batteries at the same time, then go through and clear the machine and reset all the settings. there is another battery on the back plane board.

Ditto what Jim says, replace all the batteries.  It would be ashame to have one fail 3 months from now, causing you to have to set up the game yet again.

After a battery change, you need to clear the nvram so it formats it correctly for the game.  It won't load until you clear and setup again.

Ok, thank you for all your replies. It seems as though the NVRAM got corrupted which is what I thought. I never did this before, and I don't know how to or what I need to do it. I know there is a total of 3 batteries in this machine so I will replace all of them before doing anything else. Now after I do that, I have no clue what to do. I really like this machine and kinda upset me that this happened. Now I'm afraid to make things even worse. Any help I can get to make this work again would be greatly appreciated.

look at the top CF card ( the OS card) there is a number on it, maybe 3xx  e.g.312,  this number will determine what clear CF card you will need.  read the posts on ALPHAS, there is a good video on how to clear and reset the setting on your machine, there are two of them, one is by NEONKISS, and the other is by COOLWAVEPIC,  HIS IS VERY SPECFIC TOWARD PROGRESSIVES. doing it for the first time may become a bit trying, but a little patience and several clears and you will be up and running.  plus you will get a lot of help here.

the cards I am referring to are located behind the little door on the right side of the cpu module. the top card is the OS (operating system) and the bottom card is the game Card. both can be removed by pushing the black button to the right of the card.

Ok got it. Sounds promising, makes me feel a little better. Can you recommend a place to get the card from?
