Model: MV4
Symptom: Garbled audio

Board was shipped with 2 carts

Cleaned the carts and they worked in every slot except for the Bust A Move which had garbled audio in slot 2. Cleaned the top board and replaced a slot connector. Tested.

Symptom: Only plays coin up sounds

Board would not play any audio other than coin up sounds, not even the self test sounds.

Battery leaked on the board. Removed the battery and the the corroded sound SRAM chip then cleaned the board. Tested and found no bad traces. Removed the 470 ohm resistor to neuter the charge circuit and installed a coin cell holder and battery. Installed a 24 pin socket and a replacement SRAM chip. Replaced a bad YM2610 sound chip and tested.

Model: MV1
Symptom: Dead

Board had battery damage. Checked traces, found one bad trace to the resistor pack next to the D4990, and patched it then replaced a battery damaged 20pf cap in the clock/calendar crystal circuit. Signals to the Backup RAM were present, but not cycling. Board made a couple of popping sounds out of the speakers and a quick check of the CPU clock showed it stuck low.

The 24MHz clock was missing and when probes were touched to the crystal the board would make more popping sounds out of the speakers. Replaced a bad 100 ohm resistor in the clock circuit and it was still dead. Replaced the crystal and the 2 20pf caps and it was still dead. Replaced the NEO-D0 chip and the board sprang to life with a Work RAM error on the lower chip. Replaced the chip and the board booted with a Backup RAM error on the lower chip. Replaced it and the board booted to the crosshatch. Self tests showed DIP 1, 2, and 8 were not working. Patched the damaged traces and retested. DIP 8 was still showing open but pushing on the top of the switch would make it connect. Replaced the DIP switch, removed the 470 ohm resistor, and installed a coin cell holder and battery. Played a few games of Metal Slug to test it.

Upgraded the BIOS to the latest free UniBIOS chip at the customer's request.

Model: MV4
Symptom: Backup RAM Error

A local friend brought this one over. The board was stuck on the crosshatch of death. It had a leaky battery that ate traces under it going to the top board connector. He had jumpered all the traces there and afterwards the board was then either stuck in watchdog, constantly rebooting, or stuck with a Backup RAM error.

The Backup RAM had a missing control signal on pin 20. Jumpered a corroded trace in the battery backup section and tested successfully.

When the Backup RAM has no signals going to the control pins (20 and 22) it can spuriously output data onto the bus and crash the CPU. When you get odd things happening and when there are leaking batteries on Neo Geo boards always check the Backup RAM control pins, including the R/W on pin 27.

Symptom: No sync

Board had corrosion damage on the NEO-IO chip from rodent droppings. Removed the chip, cleaned the board, cleaned the solder pads, reflowed the solder pads, cleaned the board, and cleaned the solder pads. Installed a replacement IC from a donor board, jumpered 2 corroded traces, and jumpered 2 missing pads. Tested. Audio fluttered. Recapped the audio, retested, removed leaking battery, and installed a coin cell kit. Tested.

Symptom: Lines in graphics on slot 3, low audio, change battery

The fishpaper/foam protector on the bottom side of the board had its foam go bad. When this happens it corrodes traces. Repaired a bad trace going to one of the 74LS253 data selector inputs to fix the lines on slot 3. Recapped the audio section to fix the low audio issue. Removed the leaking battery and the 470 ohm resistor. Cleaned the area under the battery, installed a coin cell holder and CR2032 battery, and tested.

Symptom: Backup RAM Error

Replaced the 74HC32 and patched a trace under it to fix the Backup RAM error. Repaired broken trace between the NEO-ZMC2 and the NEO-257 at 2/3J. Slot 2 now would play normally, but Slot 1 had lines in the display. Replaced bad NEO-257 at 2/3J and retested. Installed coin cell kit and retested again.
