Eprom programming
« on: April 16, 2016, 06:49:16 PM »
I have a Batronix eprom programmer which I'm using to back up my game maker eproms. I've read and filed my programs and am now trying to reprogram some old eproms bought off eBay. Everytime I try to load the file I get an error equal or similar to this pictured below.
Does anyone know where I'm going wrong?
Thanks, Jim

were the eproms erased before you tried to program them?  Sometimes sellers on e-bay don't erase the eproms.

If your E proms are used they most likely need to be erased with a UV light eraser or you may need an adapter depending on the chip number you are trying to use.
If it ain't broke.....Stop trying to fix it.

Erasing them isn't the issue. I have an eprom eraser. This error occurred after it passed the that check.
Thanks, Jim

Some burners use adapters for some chips as mine does.

Since you have already read and saved the files from the same sized eproms I don't think a needed daughter board is the issue. (The eproms you are trying to write are the same size as the ones in your gamemaker, right?)

I would first try to read the erased eproms. You should get all FF FF's. This procedure will assure the programmer can see (read) the erased eproms.

If not, then you have to figure out why the programmer can't see them. Maybe in backwards, or bent pin, or their damaged, or incompatible brand for your programmer.

If yes the programmer can read them, then I would look at the programming voltage. Some brands of eproms have different programming voltages.

What brand and size eproms are you trying to program?

Jim,

That's a great programmer. No adapter required. I have the same. I've experienced the same issue before. It has been with misidentified chips or just plain bad ones. I bought some ST M27C4002 chips last year from an eBay seller. They had been re-branded & weren't what they were supposed to be. (see pic). After changing the chip to TMS27C240, about half of them worked & the rest were trash. They were alleged to be "NEW" but as you can see they were not. They weren't even 100ns as advertised but 120ns. I recently noticed some on eBay by a US seller that are the same & being offered as new. You can clearly see the over stamp in his pic.

Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

I seem to have gotten things worked out and have successfully burned some chips. One question though... can I use 512 chips to copy 256 chips/eproms? My guess is yes, it just has more room on them?
Thanks, Jim

Depends on the device you want to use it for, the addressing scheme is different for both types of eproms.

The 512 chip has twice the storage space that a 256 chip has. So when you program the 512 chip the data will get stored into the lower half of the 512 chip and the upper half of the 512 chip will be empty.

The 512 chips have one additional address line connection that the 256 chip does not. The circuit board socket where you would normally install the 256 chip may not have the correct connection for this extra address line to the 512 chip, but there will be some signal there, either a logic low or a logic high. So the 512 chip will get either its lower half of storage activated or its upper half. If it is the lower half that gets activated then all is good, the 512 chip will work as a 256 chip. But if it is the upper half of the 512 chip that gets activated then it won't work since you didn't program any data in that area of the chip. Some folks get around this by programming the data into both the lower half and the upper half of the 512 chip, that way it will work in all cases. But you have to be familiar enough with your eprom programmer to do this.

As rickhunter said, it all depends on the technicalities of your circuit board. You can give it a try, won't hurt anything.

BTW, what did you find was causing the eprom programming error in your original post that started this thread?

I'm not exactly sure what was causing the issue but I believe I didn't have the chip (signature/identification) correctly set. Either that or I was trying to program a 256 into a 512.
Thanks guys, Jim
