Bally 5000 repair project
« on: October 24, 2017, 11:05:25 AM »
I'm picking up a Bally 5000 later that I want to fix up and give my mom for Xmas. Seller says it lights up, and reels spin, but flashes the codes "JP" and "4.5". I tried to research this, and closest thing I found for error code 45, reel #5. The machine only has 3 reels.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have about 2 months to finish this project.

Try clear with jackpot key on right side,

You may want to try clearing the RAM if JP reset doesn't work.
There are 3 different ways the game can be cleared.
The easiest way is to pull the I/O board part way out and power up then tap the test button.
Also check your DC voltage, test points are located on the door distribution board.
5 volts needs to be around 5.16 volts for proper operation.
If you can't get it going we fix those boards and machines in our shop.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

Just got it home tonight, seems I've got a bigger issue to sort out first. The seller didn't have the keys. From what I can see, one of the locks, which I think is the reset key, is just a regular tumbler lock, and I can probably bump that one. The one to get inside is the bigger issue.

OK I bumped the reset lock, and the noise it was making stopped, the reels stopped moving too, and now it displays this. Just noticed the coin slot is jammed up as well.

The MPU board may have a dead battery.

I'll need to open it up before I can check that. Do you know if it's safe to drill out the lock? If so, what can I replace it with?

Drilling the lock should be safe.
If you can't figure out how to get it back together with a new lock let me know and I can send you a picture of one that is intact with a lock in it.

Thanks for the offer, I'll remember it. I started drilling the lock, got about a inch deep before my drill battery died. I'm still not through it. Can you check about how deep your lock is?

It's not the depth, it's the angle.
About 1.5"

So you're saying I should drill at an angle, and have the bit come out the side of the lock?

Be more circular so you don't drill the center latch parts to pieces.

I drilled through, it was about 1.5" just like you said, I can see the latches, and manipulate them somewhat with thinner tools, but I still can't get it open.

Stick a small screwdriver into the swing arm that was connected to the end of the lock and jerk straight up.
