SafeRAM™ Clear Procedure
For a Complete, Full, or Partial SafeRAM™ Clear,
turn the machine power OFF. Unlock and remove the MPU
Assembly. Remove the Main EPROMs from U12 and U15
and replace them with the corresponding Clear Chips.
Upon ensuring that the MPU Assembly is firmly seated
into the Backplane Board, turn the machine power ON
while depressing the appropriate buttons.
Complete - Press and hold the PSEUDO COIN and
TEST buttons, then switch power ON. When the message
CH C displays in WIN PAID, release the PSEUDO COIN and
TEST buttons. The CH C message is followed by CL C.
Full - Press and hold the PSEUDO COIN button, then
switch power ON. When the message CH F appears in
WIN PAID, release the PSEUDO COIN button. The CH F
message is followed by CL F.
Partial - Switch power ON. The message CH P
displays in WIN PAID. The CH P message is followed by
CL P.
If an error was detected during SafeRAM™ Clear
as designated by E C, E F, E P in WIN PAID, repeat the
operation.
Upon a successful SafeRAM™ Clear, the button and
tower lamps flash. Switch power OFF and replace the
SafeRam™ Clear EPROMs with the corresponding
Mains. Replace MPU Assembly and switch machine
power ON. The machine will enter a Reel Calibration
procedure whereby the home position is recorded in
SafeRAM™. For tilt-free operation it is important that the
procedure completes without interruption

You always want a full clear otherwise the RAM may still have junk code in it.

A partial clear usually means your finger slipped of f one of the buttons you were holding down.

If you don't hold down both buttons that is what you usually get.

If you are sure both buttons were held down you may want to try swapping the two RAM chips in their sockets and try clearing again.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

Are chips required on a 1996 machine to perform a full clear?

99% of the time you don't need clear chips.
The age of the machine doesn't reflect the age of the software that is installed in the machine.
The very old software may need clear chips.
PM me if you want to get some tested and working clear chips.
99% of the time I don't trust E-BAY.

Here's my situation, I picked up a gimme 5 machine from a friend. When I turn the machine on I get the 83 f code. The battery is good and I have tried the"test+coin pseudo" (with the j17 jumper on) reset clear several times. Nothing I have done has erased the code. I only have experience with IGT machines.

Isn't there something you have to do with dip switches 7 and 8 on switch 1?

make sure the battery jumper J12  is on, this puts the battery into the circuit. the jumper for the ram clear is J10, located down in the right hand corner  of the board, up front .   also look at the number on your mains chips, 92000 or 95000, I THINK (memory) the 95000 you can use jumper to clear, anything else you need clear chips.

Are you measuring the battery voltage AT the RAM?
There is a very thin trace on the bottom of the board that gets ripped up by someone who thinks they don't have to take the board off of it's metal tray to replace the battery.
On the RAM chip itself, lower left with negative DC voltmeter lead, upper right with red lead.

When you hold in the test and Psuedo button and then turn the power on , you have to hold in those buttons in 30-45 seconds -  till all the buttons on the door start flashing. Then turn off the power and disconnect the jumper and reinstall you mpu.

Here is a procedure that works on some stubborn boards. I don't know why, it must have something to do with power up sequencing on a older chip or something.

1st - turn the machine on (make sure the small toggle switch between the pseudo coin and test is always in the up position).
2nd - tap the reset switch, you will see the red reset lamp go on then off.
3rd - as soon as the red reset lamp goes off, using both thumbs, press and hold in the pseudo coin and test button.

Hold them in till you see a full clear. If you only get a partial clear repeat the procedure till you see a full clear.

Remove the safe RAM clear jumper (put on one pin) and turn the machine back on.
Let the reels do their spin and bump dance and wait for the door open code (50).

Of course if you do not have battery voltage on both of your RAM chips none of this is going to work.
