help on fixing my s+ double diamond slot machine
« on: February 21, 2017, 08:20:58 AM »
hi, i have a double diamond that shuts off randomly during play or just idiling. the lights stay on but nothing else has power. the led screens have no power or any service codes. if i unplug the machine and then come back and turn it on it works fine but i never know when it will shut off. i checked connections, no burns and all seems plugged in, removed the coin hopper and pulled the board and it " looks " fine , put it back together and it started right up but the shut off again. i checked all 3 fuses and even put in new ones and no change. :Scratch-Head:   any ideas? thanks in advance

The first thing to check is the power supply connector that connects to the motherboard. It often has overheated contacts, the white plastic connector housing will usually show a brownish place. The motherboard is the circuit board that lays horizontal in the bottom of the machine, the mpu circuit board plugs vertically into it. The power supply cable comes from the power supply and plugs into the motherboard connector, that is the place to look for the problem.

No signs of burns unplugged and checked all plugs in that area

If you slide that power connector up and down a little does it act intermittent? When the machine shuts down unexpectedly do the reels feel "stiff" like they are still getting power, or are they loose? The symptoms you describe are the classic ones for a bad power supply connector.

Also, sometimes the fusecaps are loose and not holding a good connection. They should feel like there is spring tension pressing on them and they should feel snug.

That power supply connector may not be the main problem but it could still be flaky. We'll see what others have to say but I was thinking that if that power supply connector is the problem then the reels get loose because no power is getting to them. Have you checked all the fuses again just to make sure? Sometimes they can look ok but are actually blown on one end of the fuse filament, best to check with a meter.

Are you saying that now the machine will not turn on?  Have you inspected the mpu board, made sure there is no battery leakage or water damage to it?

Is this a machine that you just acquired, or one you've had for a while and it was working until this happened?

Thanks , still will not power on to play, but has lights, I also put in new fuses and when I turn the middle one, when it isn't locked, the reels wiggle but don't spin same as when I wiggle the white power supply plug on the circuit board end.

And yes the board is clean and dry and battery was tested, it's only about 3 months old, and as usual, the machine worked perfect until I moved it 10 feet , so I am guessing it is a loose connection, never had this problem before, and it worked fine after the move, it has been in its new spot for about a week before this happened

It could be one of the other molex (white plastic) connectors in there somewhere, with the machine turned on try wiggling the various connectors to see if it starts working.

When you say the lights still work if you mean the fluorescent lights then they usually do work ok, they are connected to the 115 volts AC that comes in from the wall outlet. So they will typically work even if the machine's power supply is dead. Do you have another similar machine that you can try swapping the power supply with?

The power cords are pretty much universal ac line cords but I believe the power supplies are not the same in the S2000 vs an S+. But I'm not too familiar with S2000 machines so I could be wrong about that. Since your S+ was working ok before you moved it probably something simple happened. Did you lay the machine over on its side or lay it on its back during the move? If so a loose coin, screw, nut, washer etc could have gotten stuck somewhere and is shorting out.

It was moved on a two wheeler , nothing weird, it usually comes back on after I tap stuff but now it's been out since yesterday, what is the best way to clean the contacts that are sticking up on the board that the white power supply plug plugs into, I don't want to push to hard and break one of the fingers, is there a safe way to clean it? Thanks again for your fast replies  :cool_thumb_up:

So the fluorescent bulbs are on,  the reels are stiff, is the denom. lamp on?  here is something you can try.  remove the coin tray, remove the hopper,  now you can put you hand in there and wiggle things around and see what if anything makes a difference.  you can also undo one fuse cap at a time, the top one first, the reels should become easy to turn, retighten it and undo the middle one, same results,  the denom lamp will go out as well. retighten it, this will test your fuse caps and fuses.  do worry about the bottom fuse it is for 115vac.  if the red LEDS displays are out that could be a function of the board to transformer connection, same type of plug as the power connector on the motherboard. tap in and around that area. perhaps this will lead you to the intermittent problem.

Yes light bulbs are on but none of the LCD displays are on and the light on the coin comparator is out, there are two lights above the main board that are not lit up, can I take out those fuses with the game power on ? Thanks again I'll try that now , I only moved the machine because I put it on Craigslist and didn't want people in my house, somehow the game found out and shut down, I'll try talking to it, it works with my car sometimes..lol

The male connector pins that stick up from a circuit board can be cleaned with something like fine sandpaper to remove the tarnish. The contacts inside the white connector housing are harder to clean, they are cleaned by removing them from the connector one at a time and clean by scraping or light sanding.

There are other threads here on NLG about this so you can read more detail. Here is a recent discussion about the same type of problem someone else had on their machine. It has a lot of information that pertains to your situation:
