Key chip access failure....HELP!!?
« on: January 22, 2017, 10:21:00 PM »
Switching away from an enhanced MPU and Motherboard (which was a nightmare!!!), I did a clear after replacing all of the hardware.  After running through everything as expected, I got a "Key chip access failure" message.  Very strange--I tried everything I could think of/find on NLG, including:
-clear 97, three times in a row, then rekeying;
-going to the key menu by pushing the white button - which works but I'm trying to set up a multi-denomination and it's only offering single-denom;
-tried two separate MPUs, same error;
-used a different SB chip and cleared errors, went back to the sub chip for the game, rekey, same error;
I'm at a loss.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks !

I am not clear on something.  When you used the alternate SB chip, you were able to key and setup multidenom?

I was always under the impression that after a clear and before you key, you have to run the game with the sb chip you want, clear the errors and once the game is ready for play, then you keychip. I could be wrong, but that is the procedure I've always used.  You also cannot keychip if there are credits in the game.

why did you get rid of the 1270 board?

so you install a 502/504 board and motherboard,  transfer SB and SG game chips and version chip to the 502/504, you know you need a GX1 or NX5 version chip for multi denom.

did you try and boot up and go through the two sequences to initialize the game  or started with the clear chip?

clear chip, two amber lights, then the key chip,  two amber lights, then the SB chip,  then two clear sequences using the jackpot reset key, then the machine initializes then the key chip options come up??

did the machine ever work before you swapped out boards??

I didn't try to key the alternate SB chip - I just used it to get out of the Key Cip Access Failure menu.

Yes, after the clear, I put the SB chip (for the game I'm wanting to use) in, cleared the errors, then went for the key chip (17).   For the records, I also tried with key chip 45 with the same results.

Finally, there were no credits on the machine when I tried to key it, but, even if there were, the clear would have erased them (right?).

Thanks!

Hi Jim:

I got rid of the enhanced board for more reasons than I have time to list -- error after error after error -- burned through several enhanced boards just switching games.  Sometimes they'd work, more often there was a crazy error (I.e. All of the MPU lights on except the bottom red light flashing, Netplex error lit even when the Varta was fine, etc.  Honestly will never play with enhanced again--what a nightmare!).

Yes, did exactly as you outlined, with GX1 game chip in place (see photo), same problem.

The game/machine worked with the enhanced boards when it wanted to -- but after the switch of games (with the enhanced board) it went nuts.  Then, one day, I tried a NLG recommendation to drain the varta to under 1 volt and power it back up.  Resulted in Netplex error--just left it on for a couple of hours (for the varta to charge) then powered down and back up--worked just fine for hours.  Powered it down and back up the next morning, back to error after error--take your pick:  Netplex error, all lights on MPU lit except the bottom red flashing, attempting to start up over and over and over with the DBV cycling over and over at random intervals intermixed with Netplex error -- again, just a nightmare.  So I switched the boards and, now, Key Chip Access Failure.

Hoping for something remarkable from the NLG group!

Thanks!

Sounds like you had a bad motherboard and/or problems with the ribbon cable to the power distribution

to save your sanity I would try and find out that you are working with know good items. do you know that the board you are using is good? the motherboard? and the clear chips??   try in another machine, then you know at least that something in that machine is causing your problem.

The strange thing is that I can get into menu 7 and get the machine working with single demom (though I can't get it into coinless mode) and it works just fine...it's just that if anyone cashes out there's a coin jam error.   WTF!!?

I know the MPU is good but I don't have a spare motherboard to try out.  Anyone got a tested one available?

Thanks guys,

Jason

I have a spare MB but not sure if it will help. Is token payout enabled? If so, that's causing the coin out jam when the cash out button is pressed. If not it could be a bad cabinet I/O. For a coinless set up partial token payout should be disabled & preferably set to coinless mode. I would use IVC00224 to clear & KEY00045. Those SG000598 chips will work on your 50X mpu but are better suited for the 1270. SG000363 perform much better on the 50X boards. Multi denom is a little tricky to setup because you have to choose a game selection for each denom during the key chip process then go back to denomination to assign the touch pad buttons if applicable (6-6-3 display). 5-5-2 displays will use the extra button right of Play Max to change the denom.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.
