What is everyone's recommended payback %?
« on: April 06, 2017, 09:38:33 AM »
We have been playing our machine for the past 2 days and it dosent seem to pay often. Out of 100.00 we might get 2-3 bars and about 5 cherries. Wife was getting bored since all it did was take the money

I went into settings( thanks to this board for the instructions) and saw it at 98.6% 25 cents

I thought it was odd since we seem to more frequent payouts at the casinos.

Just wondering what you all have your machines set on and what would be the highest % chip I can get for the s2000 machine

Depending on theme, the frequency of payout varies greatly.  If you have one of those multplier type machines (like 3x, 4x, 10x, 12x, etc), you will have long droughts of no pays.  As a rule of thumb, the smaller the multiplier, the more often you will get pays.  98.6% is about as high as you can go on slots.  But you need to understand, the payback % is a statistical number based on millions of plays.  Some of those pays will be HUGE, thus skewing the totals in the short run, but to "make up" for it, the machines pays little the other times.  Over a short sample size, you will can get these long droughts of no pays.  If you want more "action" get a multi-line game, it gives the impression of getting paid more, but you have a lot of losing spins, even when it pays (i.e. bet 45, get paid 5).

In general, I'd say something in the 92%-96% range of payback percentage will be fine. As Rick says, you aren't likely to see much difference from a lower percentage to a higher percentage as a home user since the number of spins you make is much lower than what the casino sees on the same machine. The whole thing is based on a very large number of spins. So with the smaller number of spins that you will play on a home machine the percentage you win can be much lower or higher. You would have to keep track of your play for a long time to see the percentage come out to equal the actual payback percentage setting.

If you drop 100 pennies from an airplane the percentage that landed heads up would not be 50%. But if you drop 10 million pennies it will be very close to 50%.

On most machines, changing the payback percent reduces the frequency of some smaller pays, but has no effect on larger ones which are infrequent anyway. Due to the "lifetime of the game" that payback percentages are based on the machine will run hot and cold as stated above. You currently have yours set for the highest payback percent possible. Some themes have tournament chip sets available and payback on those goes well over 100%, but then they are no fun because $20 can last for days. Personally, if I want to play for days on $20, I'll just play online free slots, they are tournament level payback. Keep after it, you'll hit a hot streak.

That is one of the best analogies I've heard yet to convey this concept to people.

Slot math is based on probabilities - and mileage may vary.

If you think about a coin - heads / tails flip the %% is 50/50. In reality 10 flips may result that everytime it comes up heads.
100 spins and you might get a 70/30 split.
10 million spins and you would be pretty darn close to the theoretical 50/50 split. Even if it was 5,032,000 heads to 4,968,000

You have a Reel Table that is very long - you might have 16 symbols on your strip but with all of the virtual stops in between there are usually at least 64 and as many as 256. Multiply that by 3 strips and there are a lot of combinations. Your slot draws 3 numbers and you get a combination that is matched to the Reel table. If it has a pay out you get paid. Again the table is weighted so the probability of a payout meets the stated percentage. Across 3 runs of 10mm spins (the Nevada gaming test) - you need to show the theoretical payout 3 times in a row to get the machine certified.  There is no "forced" percentages.

In the MGM grand there was one machine that had been running 21 years straight that had never hit the top award. It had a progressive with it and Nevada rules say it must be won or paid back. I have attached the article but I believe it has now been one.
