Model: My Hero
Symptom: Lines on screen when cold

The top of the screen and a few other graphic elements had lines through them for the first couple of minutes of game play until the board warmed up. Replaced a bad 315-5025 18-pin custom IC at IC46 and tested.

Replaced bad program ROM at IC132 and bad sprite ROM at IC 2 on the small daughterboard. Board would now play blind. Cleaned board, replaced bad 74S175 at IC153 and IC152 to restore video output. Graphics were corrupt and sprites were missing. Cleaned ROM legs on IC80, 81, 82, and IC63, 64, and 65 to fix graphics issue. Replaced bad 74S175 at IC67 to restore sprites. Replaced broken red LED and tested game.

Model: Clutch Hitter
Symptom: Dead. Sync is improper causing monitor to go crazy.

Removed suicide CPU replaced it with a standard 68000 CPU. Converted game to Hammer Away ROMs and set the jumpers on the daughterboard. Reflowed several sides of surface mount chips that were barely soldered at the factory and noticed that the main CPU clock was missing. The three oscillators were dead and would jump to life when the power pins were touched with the logic probe. Replaced OSC1, OSC2, and OSC3 and tested.

Reset Backup RAM to fix the garbled high score table and retested.

Model: Regulus
Symptom: Dead

Cleaned corroded pins on all socketed chips. Board would boot but had no sync and no blue. Cleaned edge connector and retested. Board would boot and play but had corrupt background graphics. Self test showed ROM 133 was bad. Checked the socket and found pin 11 (Data 0) was not making contact with the IC. Replaced the bad socket and tested the board successfully.

Model: Columns
Symptom: Dead

Replaced 2 bad 64K SRAM ICs and a damaged ROM socket then straightened a bent pin on one of the program ROMs. Board would then run through attract mode but had missing graphics. Replaced the 27C010 EPROMs (JEDEC pinout) with the correct 27C100 (non-JEDEC pinout) EPROMs and tested. Board would lock up when starting game. Replaced incorrect security IC and retested successfully.

Symptom: Leaking supercap. Will not read switches.

Removed IC31, its socket, and the leaking supercap. Cleaned under and around the cap and where IC31 was. Patched a damaged trace to IC29. Installed a new 8 pin socket for IC31 and patched a damaged trace to pin 4 of it. Game would boot but not read any switch. Replaced 2 bad pushbutton switches and 1 set of 4 DIP switches with new ones and tested.

Board had a Sega Resurrection kit installed but was not brought back to life.

Checked the data bus pins on the program ROMs from Sega Resurrection and found that the chip in A7 had garbled data lines, but the EPROM checked good in a programmer. Back tracked the circuit and found the Work RAM on the same bus and replaced it. Tested the game successfully.

Board was missing 1 program ROM, 3 SCR ROMs, 2 Sound ROMs, and 4 OBJ ROMs.

Replaced dead CPU with a 68000 CPU, replaced the program ROM and the missing program ROM with ones programmed with suicide free code. Replaced remaining missing ROMs and tested. Board worked but had graphic corruption with some elements and colors missing. Patched a gouged trace going to pin 8 (Address line A0) of the 2 Color RAMs and tested.

Symptom: Distorted sound until game warms up

Board had TK branded caps on it. These are the same failure prone caps that cause so many problems on the Neo Geo board's audio section.

Recapped the sound section and tested.

Power supply was outputting 6.75v on the 5v line and the adjustment knob only took it down to 5.7v DC. Replaced the power supply, adjusted its output to be 5.1 at the edge connector, and successfully tested the game.
