Barry,   the battery jumper next to the battery is only for putting the battery into the circuit for ram memory, it should be in the on position all the time, EXCEPT WHEN THE GAME MAY NOT BE USED FOR A LONG EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, then the jumper would be off, to save the battery life.

on bally 5500 you will only get around two years or maybe three years on a typical battery.

the only jumper you should have to move is the J-10 jumper used for the clear.   in the end it should be off as well.

Check your power supply voltages. Bally says 5 volts should be 5.16 volts.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

so the 9s are an indication of a bad power supply?

Your power supply may be taking some time to come up to full strength.
Wait for power THEN tap the reset THEN hold in test and pseudo coin, if that doesn't work check your voltages.

exchanged power supply with a NEW (NOS) - no change - voltages are good.  Again why 99999s when trying to do a full clear?

Make sure the battery voltage is getting to both RAM's.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

Got the board. Found both RAM's were raised above their sockets with Dallas smart battery modules.
Both modules were dead.
Removed them and plugged RAM chips directly into their sockets and added a new battery jumper at J12, somebody had cut the pins off.
The board cleared and played just fine.

A cautionary tale related to RAM smart modules on a Bally 5500 board.

5th time I have encountered this problem fixing 5500 boards.

thank you - i noticed the raised eproms but didn't realize they were battery related - if I hadn't sent the board to Klar - this thread probably would have been 100 pages!!!

new issue with this machine - after battery issues being fixed - the game will not game up - get the following
5.0.
4.0.0
then 00000 winner paid
loops
did the saferam clear
has old mains (92)
changed the power supply module
switched reel 3 and 1
no change.
Reseated ALL connections going to the backplane board and to power supply
If I turned turn the j/p reset key one time OR the reset button - reel 3 stops then 2 stops but 1 remains spinning with 40 error
switching the reels 1/3 no change - still have to press test or turn key to get 2/3 reels to stop
visual of the wire harness for reel 1 looks good - no pin damage male/female - wiring shows no damage.
will continuity check the reel1 harness next

no progress.
the machine still shows 5.0 the 4.0.0 the 00000 winner paid
reels do not stop spinning - get a beep then the 5.0
door is open
pressing the reset - no effect.
switching reels - no effect.
power supply voltage  5.17vdc   13vdc
continuity checked the reel 1 harness thru the backplane
saferam clear works - performed numerous times
have 92 mains so I didn't do a full clear.
