My "new" CEI MPU board - not sure what version...
« on: December 22, 2014, 06:18:30 PM »
Since someone we missed has returned   :applause: ... here's a question for him and anyone else like amechanic...
I recently bought a "removed from working machine" CEI MPU board for my Video Poker.
It's missing eprom #5. The seller might actually have that ...waiting on response.
In the meantime, I plugged it in just for kicks and got a "MUX ERROR" and the machine wouldn't go any further.
I'm curious what version this is. I can't tell by the chips. I also threw in a picture of the CGA chips. I'm hoping this may be a newer version and that I can make my machine have the "double up" option... or something more fun!

You have a 906 III board, just about the last version made; in fact, it's still used in other non-CEI games.
Your software (V. 500.06) is called Gambler's Choice; it should run on a 906 III board, as is marked on the chips.

Attached pic called Board ID shows the markings on a 906 board upper/left corner; check your board to see if it's the same.

This board would normally run on a 10-button machine with 911 backplane.

Still wondering what goes in the #5 spot?

Definitely, you have a 906III board. What goes in that other slot should be Eprom #5; all of the 9XX-series CalOmega boards use a 5-piece game eprom set.

(Wine break)

Well, maybe not....
Digging back through my old stuff, it seems I've only encountered one CEI Gambler's Choice, for which
fortunately I have some photographs, which see.
1. The machine has a 9-button front! (Never seen another!)
2. Screen is typical CEI
3. The board had the same 4 (only) chips as yours; and seemed to operate nicely!
4. The aftermarket paper tags & numbers look very similar to those on your board; I'll betcha a coupla Hungarian zlotys that your board went through the same hands as the one in my photos.

So at this point, Shorty, it looks like you've stumped me! I would suggest that the World's Foremost Authority on CalOmega/CEI (I believe he once worked there) is Dormi. Somewhat disgruntled with NLG, he may not reply quickly; if so, I'll try to dig up his direct email.

Sorry for late reply!
Wine break  :wine:
Christmas break  :XmasTree:

Well I hope he surfaces sometime. One thing I forgot - the MPU battery is dead. I just ordered some new ones which should be arriving soon. I wonder if that might be what gave me the MUX error?

Cheese, I hate this getting old crap; I mean, it's really getting old.
(My grand-dad used to say, "The second thing that goes is your memory; and I can't remember the first thing. Thank God Grandma can't either!)

I just remembered that MUX is Omega's (and many others') term for MultiPlex, ie: connection to-  or through- another computer via some interconnection scheme. And that on their final boards (906 III & up) they offered casinos the ability to hook up a CEI video slot to their in-house information tracking system.

They did this by installing, (wait for it.....) an optional MUX board!

Your machine, in which you are trying out this board, probably does not have a MUX board; but the board (and/or eprom game-set software) is configured for it.

With this remembrance in mind, and another glass of wine in hand, I did a search on the old NLG site.  Here is a link to one in which the hapless CEI owner has a MUX error. And guess what: it's on a Gamblers Choice!

http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=15592.msg133504#msg133504

So check it out; from  reading it, perhaps your dead battery is a good thing.

{...and then I realized the CEI Moderator had brought this one forward, so a search for MUX on the current NLG or the old site would have zeroed you in on the same posting... :facepalm:}

Okay ... INTERESTING news here.
I replaced the battery and ... hold breath ... plugged the new board into my CEI machine - flipped it on and it went through a short boot up process. It wanted information added (date, etc). I was able to bypass that and it booted up to a working "The Gambler's Series" machine as stated by Solid Silver!
So, the good news is that the board works. And now I have four games to play, and the graphics are much nicer too! The bad news is that my buttons are slightly off! Well the other good news is that the screen at least points to the HIT and STAND buttons but the rest aren't matched properly. I did figure them out though. Other thing is all my card buttons say DISCARD but the  word HOLD is above them! I'm really happy it worked though but I don't think I want to leave it this way. It would be nice if I could cannibalize some of the chips and make my existing/working MPU board better but I don't know if that's possible.

Hey nice job..  :applause:  Your going to be a CEI expert at this rate. I have a machine just like yours in the garage standing in line to be checked over. I have most of the pieces to put it back together.. I need a MPU tray that the board mounts too, but other then that I think it's complete.

If any one knows of any CEI machines or parts just laying around, I'd be interested if talking a deal..

Great job Mark. Grab a glass of wine any enjoy it..

Gary
Please remember to make a donation to NLG for mine/our help in repairing your machines problem.. Your donations help keep this site on line.
And remember...
If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

Weird... when I first put the board in, it prompted me to enter stuff like date, etc. I was able to bypass it and get it to work. Now I can't get back into the LEARN mode, where those settings are. In "extended menus" I've tried entering in user and pw's that SolidSilver has in the CEI info are here. But there's no ENTER button. Button 5 gets me from USER to PASSWORD, but once I enter the password and press button 5 again, it just resets.
And even though all 6 games play, I still get MUX ERROR on the side and that's probably because I don't have the MUX board (see SolidSilver's post earlier)
UPDATE: Okay I removed the mpu and just removed the one of two non-game related chips out, then put it back in and plugged the mpu back in. This time it did boot up as initially in a game SET UP mode. I got the the LEARN menu but I wasn't able to navigate around to change denomination, etc... the options were listed, but the values were scrambled and I could not change them. So it's stuck as a dollar machine.
Still it's fun to play it as a different machine but there's definitely some oddities. One thing I noticed is the Black Jack game doesn't give you any options to split or double down. I don't know if that's the way it was or it's just my machine?
I wish I could pull one of the "new" chips and place it in my original MPU and get some nicer graphics and sound. I don't think so though...

I think the main problem is my machine is too old for this software!
I bought yet another CEI board/tray that's a "300 series" to see if that works better in my machine. What I'd like to be able to accomplish is basically update my machine with the most options possible for that machine, especially the double down option, which I don't have.
That board should be arriving in the next day or so.

Okay my "new" MPU board and tray arrived. I immediately replaced the lithium battery, blew the dust off the board and plugged it in.
And... drum roll... got another working board. However, this one too is a "turbo series" so there's buttons that don't exist in my machine, that I need for various things.
It also seems to just be the one game I think. I can't change games like the 500 series. I also can't change the denomination either. It also pays for Jacks or better but that's not listed on the payout chart above.
This has been fun. Still I wish there was some kind of interchanging I could do to make my original Casino Poker game a little more interesting but, like I said before, I don't know if I an put anything in my original game from either of these two boards... or can I?

Sounds like you are trying to put a 906 Turbo into a machine wired for a 904 board. The turbo machine has a keypad next to the standard player buttons and a MUX board inside powered by a separate 12V power supply.

Yep! I didn't know anything about the turbo board until I got one, well two now. I just wanted a spare MPU for my Casino Poker so I took the chance. At least both of these seem to work but I'll probably put my original back in.
Still hoping to get any information to see if I can cannibalize anything to upgrade my original board.

I think this topic is as "solved" as possible. I'll hunt for an older MPU board and probably sell one of the two working boards I have... most likely the multi game board. If anyone has any more to add... feel free to "unsolve it." My only other question is written above in bold!

We have a stack of older 904 boards, don't know if they work or not but call Larry 702-363-9998 to see if he wants to sell one and have me get one working for you.

I left a message last time and he didn't call back. No big deal because mine works fine, but it would be nice to have a spare or two.
But, could you do anything to enhance the existing graphics from the 904 board?
