Title: Free play on Double diamond?
Post by: kb8yrw on December 16, 2014, 05:14:03 PM
I bought a Bally blazing 7's last weekend and it is setup that when you hit the change button it gives you a credit. Hit it three times and you get three credits. Is there a way to setup my S+ Double Diamond to do the same thing?  :Scratch-Head:  It is a pretty cool mod I think and it keeps me from recycling quarters to play. If it can't be done to this machine I am thinking about buying a bunch of those used tokens to play with.  Anybody ever do this mod to an S+ ?

There is a way to do this on S+ machines. I wire the service switch to the coin test switch on the coin optics and cut a door optics wire and run it through a toggle switch. I will post a diagram tomorrow evening when I have more time.

Here is a write up I came across years ago that I personally have not tried...Sounds like it would work...Not sure who wrote it, but here it is...

"S+ free credit mod.

Wanted to come back and let everyone know that I got this working today.  I had to replace the cherry switch on the Bet 1 Credit button, as it wasn't giving a good short when closed (.112).  I connected two wires to the pads of the optics credit button, then ran them to the proper lugs of the cherry switch on the Bet 1 credit button.  Make sure you remove the normal connectors to that switch, otherwise you will get a 21 (coin tilt) error.  Then I disconnected the plug for the door optic on the side mounted on the door.  Turned it on, shut the door, and everything is working.  I push the Bet 1 Credit button and I get credits.  After 2 it stops registering more credits like it should, and the arm or the Bet 2 Credits button will cause it to spin.  When it wins, credits are added to the memory.  If I hit the Bet 1 Credit button, it adds coins to the Played, but doesn't subtract from the memory.  Or I can Bet 2 and spin from memory.

 Works just fine."

Attached is the diagram for S+ free play. I wire the free play to the service button so the machine can also be played as a regular machine. The free play button could be any button on the button deck.

Thanks guys that is exactlly what I was looking for. Thinking about it and it makes perfect sense. Basically you are faking the machine out by making it think the door is open and hitting the test switch remotely. I am going to get this done before the family gathers for the holidays. I like that it can be played normally also, best of both worlds!

Just to let you know. I did this on one of my S+ machines and it works great! :thank_you:

Call me dumb, but why would you need to install a toggle? Will not this mod work with the door optic intact?

The door optic remains intact. You are just "tricking" the machine into thinking the door is open. If the machine knows that the door is closed, it would not allow pressing of the coin optics button (which is intended to test the coin optics). It will show credits, and, you can hit pays. However, once you close the door with door optics enabled, those will go away and it will return to whatever credits you had in the first place.

Thank you. Second question. Why not simply disable the door optics in programming?. I realize just unplugging the sender or receiver accomplishes the same thing, however, wouldn't doing this mod and keeping the game in door open mode affect error codes, or accounting programing? Something about this mod is giving my gut instinct alarm bells for some reason.

There's no "programming" that can be done to disable the door optics.  The whole point point of free play is to keep accounting out of the equation.  I don't think the people who are doing this mod are concerned with accounting.  This work around is nothing more than what techs used to validate functionality of the machine.  If you have tilts of any kind you wouldn't be able to play the machine using this mod as the error would have to cleared.

Ok then. So long as it works, I'll give it a go. Thank you.    :hail: :hail: :hail:

I see this is a rather old post.

If the door optics are disabled,  doesn't that disable game play?

I would very much love to do this on my s+ Red white and blue.

This mod makes use of the diagnostic coin-in button that is on the coin-in optics.  Techs used it to test machine functionality while the door was opened.  This mod only works with the door open, as closing the door will disable the coin-in button on the optics.  All the mod does is connect a button on the player panel (in this case the service button) to the solder pads of the switch that is in the coin-in optic board.  Pushing the service button would then close the switch on the optics board causing credits to be added to the machine so you can spin the reels.  If you close the door, this mod would get disabled.
