Help a newbie - S+ chip upgrade
« on: November 21, 2017, 12:01:30 PM »
So just bought a S+ Double Diamond with a sp731 & ss3442 chip in it.  Looking to upgrade it to make it more fun to play.  If I understand my research so far on this forum I can use a ss4270 chip from a Double Jackpot Haywire to give it better odds and the Haywire Bonus feature.  Assuming I grab the ss4270 chip off eBay, is it as simple and powering down and swapping just that chip and powering back up or is there more to it?  Do I need to do anything with the sp731 chip?  I don't want to damage my new toy.  Thanks Guys!

As slots4home said you will need to change the SP chip also. The Haywire feature is a Type 2 game. There are lots of Type 2 game chips. One of the newest is an SP1274. I use an SP873 in an S+ Haywire I have. You might check where you get the Reel chip or one of our vendors may message you. And welcome to NLG.

Hey guys I got my new chips today sp1146 and ss4270, installed them and the game seems to play fine and the haywire feature came up for me but there is no sound at all not even a coin drop.  Put the old chips back in and sound works fine. Any ideas?  Maybe related but with the new chips the red LEDs seem to flicker, with the old chips they are nice and bright with no flicker.

You could double-check the sound settings by pressing the white TEST button inside the machine and see if they are set correctly.

I did check those settings and they seemed ok, plus they shouldn't change on their own with a game change should they?  Swapping back the old chips brings all my sounds back.

Not sure about the 1146, maybe the dip switches on your board need to be set. Curious why you didn't use 1274. Did you check to make sure no legs are bent causing the flicker.
Thank Ya Thank Ya Very Much.

I probably should have gone with the 1274, not sure why the vendor sent me a much older chip, looking into replacing it now.  I think I got a bad chip

the sounds have to be turned on see rokgpsman post

press and release the self test switch 3 times and should be 2 - 0 on the display.

press spin reel button once then 2 - 1 = sounds on and if you need to change the volume then turn the key .. then 3 - x .. increase x with spin button which increases volume

I'm sure the SP1146 chip has sound capability, no casino would want a "silent" machine, so it should give your machine sound. I looked at the SP1146 document and it said the dipswitches on the mpu board are not used, doesn't matter what they are set to. Don't assume the sounds are turned on, actually go into the TEST/Setup menus and set the two sound settings ON, set volume to a higher level, see what happens. The SP1146 chip may use a different cmos memory location for the sound settings than your other SP chip does, who knows. It is easy to do and worth a shot.

I think I'm on the path to solving my problem the 1146 Chip is a 16mhz and my machine is a 10mhz, I should have gotten the 1274 chip.

Now I just need the vendor who sold it to me to correct the problem.
