Model: Killer Instinct (Nintendo/Rare)
Symptom: Dead

Board had physical damage.

Replaced 1 physically damaged DRAM chip. Jumpered 1 broken pad. Replaced 1 broken surface mount monolithic capacitor and remounted a surface mount tantalum cap that was popped partially off the board. Board would run but had no sync. Replaced a bad surface mount coil in the video ground circuit and tested.

Model: Killer Instinct 2 (Nintendo/Rare)
Symptom: Burned component

Board had a burned surface mount tantalum capacitor on the -5v line in the audio section. Removed cap, cleaned board, and installed a replacement capacitor. One solder pad was gone so a standard leaded tantalum cap was installed instead of a surface mount. Bent the negative lead to form the missing traces. Tested board.

Model: Killer Instinct v2.0
Symptom: Repeating partial blue screen

KI will paint the screen blue starting from the top and flowing down to the bottom of the screen while it tests the RAM. If it fails, it will start painting the screen blue again and keep repeating.

Replaced the low count 4-chip memory SIMMs with 2 4Mb SIMMs that had discreet RAM chips on them. Tested.

Model: Killer Instinct
Symptom: Reboots when gameplay starts

Cust. was using a Compact Flash card as a replacement for a failed hard drive. Using a non-factory drive requires the replacement of the boot ROM with one that will work with any drive and the rebooting is caused by the wrong drive/ROM combination. Burned a replacement ROM, installed it, and successfully tested the game.
