Bally 889-C $1 slot trouble
« on: July 31, 2017, 07:53:47 AM »
I am seeking advice on troubleshooting a Bally 889-=C $1 machine I picked up over the weekend.  I have great confidence in this site and the users so I have made the donation up front before receiving help!

I will do my best to explain the problem and excuse my lack of knowledge and terminology.  I own two other EM Bally machines and know just enough to be dangerous.

When coins are inserted they come directly back to tray and I get no "coin inserted" light.  Inside the door the coin scavenger coil that operates the mechanism that allows the coin to be refunded is "energized" so stays open and is buzzing a little.  I assume if this wasn't energized or the "gate" was closed the coin would go into the hopper as it should.

Do you think the coin scavenger coil is bad?  It is a CD-29-1700. What else should I be looking at.  I will also say that the machine worked a couple of times when I picked it up so this just started.  The machine was sitting for many years.

Please let me know if further explanation is required.

Thanks, Rich

Scavenger coil. On the dollar machines the coin reject device is called a scavenger coil. When it is on, the machine is supposed to reject coins.

On smaller denomination machines the device is called a coin lockout coil. When the lockout coil is off then those machines reject coins.

Push down on the coin in switch to see if the game plays correctly.
In The case of the dollar machine, your scavenger coil should be on (reject coins) after max coins played, during handle pull & reel spin, during payouts & when you push the coin return button.
We can work through this until you find it.
Check 1st thing your coin return switch, then check your odds disc switches to make sure they open and close when they should.

I checked the coin return switch and it looks like there may be a connection missing?  The top connector has traces of solder so looks like something used to be there, the yellow wire with the clear sleeve is suspicious, is that supposed to be connected to the top?  When I push up or down on the coin return switch there is no change, scavenger coil stays energized.

The scavenger coil has 3 orange wires on one connection and a red with blue stripe on the other.

In your top photo it does look like that yellow wire used to go to the top terminal of the nearby switch. Someone may have disconnected it because of another problem or whatever. I'm also not sure about that red wire and the wire inside the black sleeving that goes to the bottom terminal of that switch. Perhaps someone did this mod to keep the scavenger coil activated all the time for some reason.

We'll see what others have to say or maybe someone will post a photo showing how that switch is wired on their machine.

I would guess that your switch is OK.
Does the gameplay properly when you push down on the coin in switch?
Does the scavenger coil turn off when the reels are spinning?

Reno,

When I push down on the coin return switch the scavenger coil remains energized (so no difference) so I am not able to get the machine to release the reels.

The coin in switch is what the dollar hits after it passes through the coin acceptor. Push down on it gently & that should release your handle so you can spin the reels.

See photo for coin switch.
Try pressing down on the coin switch trip wire. This should set the machine up for a play.
If this works, play the machine to loosen it up. The contacts that operate the scavenger coil may start working.
Most likely you'll need to clean all contacts pertaining to the scavenger operation.

The picture of the yellow wire. Make sure that's not touching the door. The scavenger coil is activated by the coin reject button on your machine. If its constantly on I'd make sure your problems not that yellow wire. With the EM machines, you can play them with the door open. So with your finger just flick your coin switch wire to add credits. When you do this, your handle should release so you can pull it to spin the reels.
Please remember to make a donation to NLG for mine/our help in repairing your machines problem.. Your donations help keep this site on line.

Fixed!

Thanks everyone for the kind help.  Turns out the problem was a couple pinched wires near the upper door hinge.  Everything works as it should now.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement agitator (rubber is all gummed up), just need the black piece.

Thanks, Rich

I sent you a pm on the agitators.   the only way I found to clean off the black goo is to use finger nail polish remover(acetone)  wear rubber gloves, this stuff will stain your fingers.   it will wear off eventually.

This whole slot machine thing is a addiction you will need to buy a bigger house you will fill your living room dining room and kitchen soon it does not take long :banghead:  I've already done that but I have a lovely wife that accepts it and enjoys it

And back on Pointe back in the early 80s to get that black tar off of that wheel we froze them with R22 because we also had to take care of the air conditioning in the casino if you don't have access to 22 you can use propane just don't smoke the stuff Falls right off
