IGT Ceronix monitor in CEI
« on: December 18, 2016, 02:21:20 PM »
I have a CEI 906 III turbo game board and 911 motherboard in my Casino Poker machine. Had it about 6 months recently developed some problems and starting working on it. Found that it has an IGT Ceronix monitor assembly model number 1492. Sometimes when first turned on a small transformer on the circuit board item #258 will arc and again occasionally when the game is left on. The video was very sharp and clear before it developed a problem. Now the video is scrambled and gameboard is not functioning properly. Not sure if it is just the gameboard is causing the scrambled video or if both are having a problem. Odd both would develop a problem at the same time. Any suggestions?

I would think that if you have a video output signal, it's not the ceronix chassis causing the scrambled picture.. Have you tried to reseat all the plugs on the mother board? I had one here last summer that it's problem was with bad plug connections due to tarnished pins.. Just plug and unplug each connection a couple times..  You mention a item #258, where is it, on the Ceronix or mother board? I know I have a mother board pulled from a parted out machine.. It looks good, no bad traces or burnt plugs.. Have you removed your mother board to check for coins or other metallic items like washers or screws behind it? I saw you other pictures of the arching on the mother board..

Yah it would be most likely that the scrambled video is coming from the game board. I removed all the plugs on the motherboard a couple of times, didn't help. The transformer labeled 258 is on the monitors circuit board on the front left corner. Sometimes when it is first turned on it will spark a couple of times and then later when the machine is left on. I have not worked on these machines before so they are all new to me. The motherboard appears to be working fine. Other than the arcing after cleaning off the area it hasn't arced again. The 5v, 12v and serial DC leds are lit. Have not removed it yet, but will investigate the idea of something metal lodged in behind it. It has 3 large caps which I plan to replace. The machine has a multiplexer card also. Is this possibly used to interface with a central computer in the casino for jackpots or an audit to wins and loses? I plan to pull it out and just strip the machine down to the required boards to operate.

I'll put out a Ceronix chassis to see what 258 is. I have worked with the 1492 chassis for over 10 years and have never seen on cause a scrambled video screen. I've seen them different colors, loss of horizontal and vertical pictures, even catch on fire because of a bad solder connection. Burnt a hole right thru the dang board, but I've never seen one cause what your showing in pictures. That usually has to do with a problem with the graphic chip curcuit on the MPU board. That is why you use a freeze spray to see if the problem clears up when items are sprayed. The main problem could be a bad cold solder joint or bac IC sockets. Some of those eprom get hot and heat cycles crack solder joints causing some very strange problems.....

Ok. I pulled out a 1492 Ceronix. The #258 part is a switch mode transformer. I've never seen one go bad, but it doesn't mean they don't. You might want to check the solder connections on it. I think you did say things were dusty or dirty. That transformer does have exposed wires and board connections. Make sure it's clean and dust free. I do have that part.

Yah, I found a pdf copy of the manual this morning on the internet which included a schematic and located that little transformer. Took a like paint brush and brushed away the dust and blew it off. Have turned it on and off several times during the day and left it on several times and no longer see or hear any arcing sound. So that may have solved the problem. Wish I had another complete machine to substitute parts with.
