WMS 550 - Jurisdictional Jumper Changed on Power Up
« on: November 14, 2017, 08:12:22 AM »
Hello, thanks for stopping by.

On my Reel em in 2 machine I get a TILT - Jurisdictional Jumper Changed on power up.  It cannot be reset with the admin key or pressing the diagnostic button.  We get this error almost every time we power on the machine.

The "fix" is to wait about 5 minutes, power down the slot, power the slot back on.  Most of the time (like 95%) the slot will power up without the tilt.  Some times it'll have the same error.  We just wait 5 minutes and repeat the process until it starts.

Once it starts up the machine plays fine.  No issues at all.  Well other than the fact that it steals my money....... but I think that must mean it's working right?

The battery has been changed.  No acid damage from battery.  Boards reseated.  Game roms reseated.

I do not have a clear chip.  If the machine plays fine after the 5 minute retry method would a clear even do anything?

While the slot does work.... any of you have any ideas as to what may be happening?

Thanks again!

I *think* that the Jurisdiction jumpers are located on the I/O board which is in the card cage on a WMS 550 machine. You can pull the I/O board and look in the corner of the board for these jumpers, see if the soldering and connections on the jumper wires is well done or flaky. If I remember right the jumpers are located near one of the white extraction handles that you use to remove the board.

On some I/O boards instead of having a hard jumper wire there is a dipswitch installed. Over time the little mini-switches in the dipswitch can get intermittent. You can try flipping the mini-switches back & forth a few times to see if that corrects things. Inside the dipswitch is a small ball that moves back and forth to make the connection for the mini-switch, it is held in place by a small spring that the plastic switch rocker arm presses down on. That spring gets weak and the little ball no longer makes good contact. If this is what you have and you can't get it to work reliably it is probably best to remove the jurisdiction dipswitch and simply solder in a hard wire jumper.

Below is an I/O board for a WMS 40X machine showing where the jurisdiction jumpers are located, this board is similar to your WMS 550 I/O board. Look in this area on your WMS 550 I/O board to see if anything is amiss. These jumpers are read by a chip when the machine is powered-up, so it is also possible you have a flaky electronic problem developing, hope not.

Thanks for the detailed information.  That board looks identical to ours.

There are two jumpers soldered in the area with your red circle.  They seem ok.  Seem is the key word.

I took the other dip switches and gave them all 4-5 toggles.  They were all in the position similar to your picture.

Powered up and the slot started up fine.

If it go can a few days off and then back on and then a few days off and then back on without a problem I think you've nailed it.

It would rarely start without the tilt so I think you're on to something.

Thanks!

Those hard jumper wires that are soldered in place are soldered to a connector we used to call a "jumper block". The jumper block is often plugged into a socket, or it may be soldered directly to the circuit board. If it is plugged into a socket and the machine acts up again you can try removing and reinstalling the jumper block, in case the socket connections are flaky. You can remove it sort of like removing an eprom (chip), by inserting a small flat-blade screwdriver under one end and gently twist or pry upward. Then do the other end. Go back and forth gradually and it will come out of the socket. Be careful not to let the tip of the screwdriver dig into the circuit board while you are doing this.

The game software in your machine was written for a particular jurisdiction in accordance with the gaming regs in that jurisdiction and the jumpers tells the machine that all is ok as far as being in the right jurisdiction. It's legal stuff that the gaming regulators require. On some machines there are no jurisdiction jumpers.

If it seems that it is the dipswitch that is acting up we've fixed them for a while by applying a drop of alcohol to the top of the mini-switch and then work the mini-switch rocker arms back & forth. The alcohol helps to clean the little ball making contact inside, and it also thins the dried electrical grease inside the dipswitch so the little ball can move freely. But on a flaky dipswitch it is probably best to replace it or install hard wire jumpers in its place.

Glad you got it going (hopefully). Can you post a photo of your WMS 550 machine, I've never seen one except in an old brochure. Did you get it from another owner or from a slot machine dealer?  Thanks!

My dad bought it.  Not sure from where really.  Likely it was a dealer.  We inherited it when my folks downsized their house.

That's a great tip on the dip switches.  I'll try that if it starts acting up again.  Thanks!

Thank you for the photo. Hopefully it will continue working reliably for you.

That red dipswitch on the I/O board that is near the red LED is for setting up a progressive jackpot in the casino, not normally used at home and all of the dipswitch mini-switches are set to OFF. The jurisdiction is set by jumpers on that jumper block about an inch over from the red dipswitch, it is labelled "SW1" on the board.
