BB1.5 - 19" monitors to 22".. Difficult?
« on: June 08, 2014, 12:24:43 PM »
I was curious how difficult and/or what is needed to swap 19" monitors to 22" in a BB1 with NXT2 (BB1.5).

Any tips/tricks on doing this? I know it takes some cutting, bending, mod'ing, etc.. Hopefully it's not too much of a pain in the arse. - Any info is appreciated.

Thanks!

(Oh, Already have the 22" factory BB2 top and bottom monitors ready for the swap.)

You need to decide on a bezel for the door if you want to use one.  Otherwise it looks unfinished.  I used a BB2 bezel.  Also, you need power and touch screen cables for the top and bottom monitors.  Mounting brackets to hold the monitor in the door.  Lots of cutting to the door, cabinet at the hinge, and to the top chrome piece of the top box so the monitor will fit.  Other than that take your time and make sure the monitor fits perfectly in the door or you will crack the glass if it's too tight when you close it.  Also be aware that you will no longer be letting slamming the door closed since some of the hardware will have to be permanently removed at the door latch that helps support the door when it closes.
If it ain't broke don't mess with it.....

Wow, seems like a lot of work... But worth it I think..

Do you have a few pics of the 22" monitor installed? Just to get an idea.. Did you have to make up your own brackets?

I will do some heavy meditating before I dive into the swap.. Every modification has to be perfect I take it.. No going back once the cutting begins..

Thx

No pics handy but yes, made my own mounting brackets as well as the cables.  When doing the cutting it's best to trim extra so the fit is not overly tight.

Here's my WIP conversion from bb1 to bb2.  The NEC is just mounted and held in place because it fits so well, no brackets or screws hold it.  The other monitor I have not yet started, it is the one with the broken touchscreen.  Hard to see in the picture, but it's there.  A note, if you use the 19" Monitor with the 22" top monitor, you won't get the nice logo picture, you will get a WMS log screen with the text 800x600 in 2 inch tall text letters on the top left of the screen.  I didn't have a 19" handy to test to see if you get the logo with dual 19's but my guess is yes, since I saw that this afternoon while I went looking around a casino locally that had a few 1.5 machines on the floor.

Well I am about 1/3 of the way there with the swap (3hrs of work so far).. Just need to make a few brackets today to fully secure the lower monitor in place (I'm using temp crap brackets now), then on to the top box. Bezels will be last seeing I have a few in the mail that I plan on destroying to make fit! - Once I am finished I plan on writing up how I did the swap, it may be helpful to others.

(I will also have an OEM dual 19" setup with all brackets, bezels and harnesses if anyone is interested..)

Here are a few pics so far.

Top box monitor wasn't too bad.. I simply used brackets to snug fit the monitor (like it wont budge side to side).. I will then add 2 long metal brackets that run from the bottom of the top box to the original mounting brackets on the monitor.. At that point you can shake or hold the machine upside down and it will not move. I just have to make a trip to a friends shop to cut and bend some metal..

The only prob I see, is now that the top monitor is installed, I have no way to bolt the actual top chrome bezel (with candle attached) to the top box.. I may have to drill tiny holes to attach it from the outside seeing it would need to be removed if the monitor ever needed to be taken out..

Anywho, this is my progress so far.. I still need to make bezels, make a few permanent brackets to replace the temps and clean up the wires/power supplies that run each monitor..

Until then...............  :cool_thumb_up:

Wow! It looks awesome and legit! Was the bottom monitor easy to convert to a 22" vs the top?

The 22 is the same height as the 19in right, just wider?

Thanks.. The bottom was harder to figure out, but it fits perfectly after a little finagling. - Yup, both the 19 and 22 are the same height (22 is actually 1/8"ish shorter).

I will update the pics once I have a chance to make the brackets. Bezels will be the hard part.

Lower monitor permanent brackets completed.. (I coulda bent them better but they hold that beeotch tight, so I kept them  :Tongue_Out: )

The bottom of the monitor rests on part of the inner door so I only used pressure brackets on the bottom to hold it tight to the frame.

Now to whittle the bezels.......................  :EmoticonHelp4:

(Oh, and just wanted to point out that I removed the main door latch and cherry switch seeing the monitor would not fit with it.. I then ran the main door cherry to the lower belly door spot. I simply left the belly door cherry switch zip-tied inside the cabinet with the switch pulled out/ON. When you open the main door the belly goes with it so it worked out perfect.)

Top monitor bezel complete.

Instead of whittling the bezel out of something, I simply spent $9 to have some rigid plastic'ish photo mat cut by a machine at a picture framing joint. Fits like OJ's glove!

On to the bottom bezel install, then we can call this mission COMPLETE!

Bottom 90% finished.. There is a gap due to the curve of the door on the inner top sides so I plan on having some matching side pieces cut (as seen in the 3rd pic).  But, this mission has been completed in my book..

Feel free to ask questions if/when anyone takes on this swap..

Enjoy, Fellas.

Looks good Harvs.  My monitor doesn't quite fit the same as yours as I have a Ceronix, and not a Kristel and it seems mine is just a tad wider. I cannot get the monitor to go flush against the bottom part of the door like yours are, the little tabs on the door inhibit that possibility and I would have to cut those off in order for it to fit the way yours are fitting.  Wish I had known that and would have gotten the Kristel monitors instead.  For now, I have the door mounted outside of the door frame (I know totally ghetto), but I don't really want to modify the original cabinet because eventually it will go back to being a bb1 when the bb2 cabinets become more reasonable to own.

Don't tell anyone, but I DID have to bend and break off 3 of the tabs on each side of the inner door.. The tabs that hold the 19" plastic bezel in place. I left the top tab on and removed the lower ones, fitting the 22" monitor butt tight.. The 19" bezel still slides right in and holds just fine with the top tabs and lower door, if you ever wanted to change back. Can't tell the difference with or without those lower tabs removed.

So my 22" monitor is on the way and just have a few questions about the conversion. I am sure once I get the monitor I will figure this out but I just want to make sure that I get all the needed items for the conversion.

1) What is the best way on how to remove the tabs without breaking other things.

2) The brackets. What would you recommend. you mentioned brackets but where should I get them Home Depot, ect?

3) I ordered a Ceronix DC 22"... How do I modify the existing harness to work with the new monitor?

Thanks for the help.

The tabs aren't that strong, they can be bent right off. I used linemans.

Brackets will have to be made to fit your specific monitor. I used a prog meter bracket for the tops (cut and drilled holes etc), and 2 bent pieces of metal to hold the bottom in firmly.

Your harness will be the hardest part in my opinion. I used an OEM 22" screen harness for my particular touchscreen and powered the actual monitor with a brick supply.

All that being said, you may have a different method and can avoid breaking the tabs etc.. The housing on your monitor may be slightly different so you will have to MacGyver it as you go.

Where did you get your brick supply? So a BB1 won't power the monitor alone?

As Jim (Bettor) has mentioned in other posts, the machine can power the monitor. Not sure if that depends on make/model, amps etc of the monitor though.. I bought a brick supply locally that matched the amperage/power and it works like a charm, cost me about $20 with a connector.
