Data East Games
« on: May 04, 2014, 07:50:08 PM »
Fixed: Captain America:
Symptom: Dead, missing parts.

Replaced 2 missing proms with ones pulled from parts Capt America board. Moved over 7 EPROMs from the parts board and burned an EPROM to replace the missing 8th. Fixed a short on the bottom of the board. CPU would not come up. Checked the reset line - it was being held high and never cycled from low to high to have the CPU boot normally. Traced it back and replaced a broken capacitor to fix the board.

Fixed: Robocop:
Symptoms: Dead

Replaced 6 missing EPROMs, installed 2 20-pin sockets and 2 74als245 ICs. Still dead. Found and replaced a bad 20 pin socket on the ROM board. Board now booted but had corrupt background and foreground graphics. Did a physical inspection of the board and found bent pins on one of the graphics processors. Fixed the bent pins on graphics processor IC to fix the background graphics. Found and fixed three burnt traces under the 74LS157 ICs to fix the character/foreground graphics and finish the game.

Fixed: Mutant Fighter
Symptom: Dead

A physical inspection turned up a hit on the bottom board that has pushed the solder on 2 plate throughs together to where they shorted. Dabbed a bit of rosin flux on the lump and used the soldering iron to unbridge them. Game booted but had no audio. Replaced the broken volume control pot (one leg had come loose from the pot) to finish the repair.

Symptom: Scrambled sounds

Board was randomly playing incorrect sounds. Resoldered the 2 OKI 6295 sound chips and a 74LS283 IC then tested the game.

Symptom: Graphic Corruption on player/enemy

One address line was missing on the ROM at C17 and the clock signal on pin 11 was missing on the LS373s at A20 and A12. Cleaned a liquid spill and repaired 2 bad traces and 1 bad plated thru hole under the ROM at C17. Tested.

Model: Captain America
Symptom: Dead. Missing parts.

Board was a parts board being resurrected. Replaced 3 missing PALs and 8 missing EPROMs with ones from another parts board. Board still dead. Replaced a missing 5 pin 1k resistor network and resoldered a partially removed one. Board would then boot but had graphic corruption between player/enemy and backgrounds. It also played incorrect sounds.

Fixed bent/shorted pins between the character ROMs and the background ROMs to fix the graphic issue. Resoldered the 75 chip to fix the incorrect sound issue. Installed 2 missing 9 pin 1k resistor networks for player 3/4 controls. Tested.

Model: Captain America and the Avengers
Symptom: Dead.

NOTE: Board was struck on the MAN-06 mask ROM hard enough to crack it into 2.

Repaired a corroded trace to the left of the CPU and tested. Board worked but had graphic corruption. Replaced the MAN-08 mask ROM with a 27C800 EPROM and tested. Board still had corrupt graphics but would change with flexing. Reflowed the 52 and 71 customs and tested. Board looked much better but had some graphic corruption in repeatable locations.

Replaced the MAN-06 mask ROM that was paired with the -08 ROM and retested successfully.

Model: Burger Time
Symptom: Dead. Dirty board.

Cleaned boards. Replaced 16 corroded 24-pin sockets and 3 corroded 40-pin sockets. Cleaned the legs on the PSG2 AY-3-8910 sound chip. Replaced the sound 6502, 2732 EPROM, and PSG1 AY-3-8910 chips as they had rotted legs. Cleaned all the ROMs on the top board and reinserted them. Replaced 6 2732 Graphics EPROMs on the bottom board with rotted legs. Patched 2 traces to the Work RAM and the game would boot to a red screen of green half-diagonal blocks. Rearranged the graphics ROMs based on the schematic and the board booted to a blank red screen.

Patched a broken trace on the top board causing DIP Switch 1, switches 2-8 to not be read. Recapped the audio section and replaced 2 broken resistors. Game would not boot into self tests with a red screen and orange text, but the screens would fly by quickly. Patched multiple broken traces on the 74LS74 IC at 13F in the coin switch input circuit to fix the coin switch inputs which were used to switch self-test screens. Patched a bad trace on 6J, pin 6, to the graphics RAM at 8J, Pin 15, to fix the red screen issue. Patched more bad traces on the bottom board to finish getting the game running, but the colors were incorrect on the screen.

There is more than one boardset style to Burger Time! Found a picture online and rearranged the ROMs to match to fix the color issue. The positions listed in MAME do not match the board locations for the ROMs on this version of board. Tested.

Model: Gate of Doom
Symptom: Corrupt graphics, lines on screen

Reflowed multiple customs with popped pins. Board would boot and play, but had bad colors and lines on the screen. Replaced one bad RAM and narrowed the lines to the custom IC labeled '55.' Sourced a replacement off a parts board, swapped out the 55, and patched a corroded trace to finish the repair. Tested.

Symptom: Graphics missing

Board was missing the splash screens between levels, graphics on title screen, and moving background graphics flickered badly. Replaced both ribbon cables and tested. The old ribbon cables were very stiff and making poor connections where they were crimped.
