Bally S5500 Reel problem
« on: November 22, 2016, 02:31:31 PM »
Looking for some direction with this.  My brother-in-law's machine had a low battery (81) code, so I replaced it for him.  I did a complete ram clear and thought all was well.  After moving the jumper & re-installing the board, I powered it up.  It accepted the coins, but when I began the play cycle, only reels 1 & 3 spun. Reel 2 just goes into a jerking motion, forward & back, and the machine tilts out after the first reel locks in.  I swapped reels 2 & 3, the problem stays in the reel 2 position.  I put his board in my machine with the same result, jerky #2 reel.  Obviously the problem is in the main board, but where?  I tried re-seating the chips with no change.  In the manual it tells you to go to test 5, & hold the change button while do this to initialize the reels.  It had no effect, same problem.  Does anyone have any ideas what I can do next, short of replacing the board?

Not sure which chip and resistor controls the reels? Get another board or send it to K-Larry , Larry  Weber for repair.

I've been searching for a working replacement board.  Haven't located anything yet.  I am aware of Larry Weber's services.  Thanks for your response though.

I've had that happen on two seperate occasions. The 1st time the problem was solved just by unplugging the offending reels wire harness and then simply plugging it back in, re-seating the connection. The 2nd time the problem turned out to be a bent "prong" where the cpu plugs into the back plane board. Those little brass prongs are real easy to bend, I would definitely check to make sure. A bent one will cause all kinds of mayhem...

It's not the wire harness.  The reason being that the problem follows the board.  I tried my brother-in-law's board in my machine & got the same reaction.  Conversely, when I put my board in his machine, his machine plays fine.
I checked the connectors.  All the "prongs" are straight, none bent.
Thanks for responding though.  Apparently, this isn't a common problem, since I've gotten so few replies.

On the cpu board find the bank of dip switches located at position JW3 move SW.7 back and forth a couple times making sure that it is fully on or off and not resting in between on/off. SW.7 controls reel spin, on = normal reel spin, off = crazy reel spin (reels randomly spin in different directions). Also be sure that SW.8 is on. Do that then do a ram clear and see what happens.

Tried it........same result.  Actually had a glimmer of hope for a second.....Reel #2 spun in the correct direction momentarily, then went back to shuddering as before.  Thanks again.

Either the mpu got damaged in some fashion during the battery swap or the required chips removed to perform a safe ram clear are not re-installed properly.

Ram clear doesn't require chips.  Just use the jumper to clear.  I've never had a problem changing batteries before.  I've done quite a few.  Oh well, replacement board is on its way.  I guess I've got another "parts" board.  Thanks for your response.
