Title: What to do with old CRT's
Post by: SilverFerret on May 11, 2017, 07:22:58 AM
I've replaced two of the three CRT monitors I have with LCD and will eventually replace the third as well and want to ask what I should do with these monitors That I have taking up space in my garage? I'm the guy who hates to throw anything away but it seems there's no going back from LCD. What do you suggest?
Thanks, Jim

If you don't do Tilt's suggestion

Put them out at the curb since they are considered hazardous waste and maybe someone will pick them up and sell them at a flea market.

If they are working maybe someone here might need them.

I must have 15 old CRT here.. Most still work, just the chassis are bad.. It's a little hard for me to do st Tilt did since I live in the City Limits.. If I still lived in  Detroit, no one would mind, since I use to hear guns shots all the time..

Back before all the EPA regulations we were taught to put the crt into a container like a large heavy-duty cardboard box or a trash can. Then take a broom or similar long pole and whack the narrow neck at the back of the crt to break it off. This releases the vacuum inside and makes the crt safer from hurting someone if it got dropped or mishandled. Then we put them into a cardboard box and put them into the normal trash.

Later when the EPS regs came out we would put the old crt into the new crt's shipping box and send it to the mfr for disposal. I think they took out the recyclable stuff like the copper wiring in the yoke and degauss loop, metal parts of the guns inside, etc.

Some bigger cities have setup a place where you can drop off stuff that they classify as hazardous, like crt's, old cans of paint, etc that they no longer want in the landfill. If you have a tv/computer monitor repair place they may be willing to take them for you.

In some places you could probably set them out by the curb with a "For Sale - $50" sign and somebody would swipe them overnight.   :garfield:

I used to repair TV's back in the early 70's. I'd always take the jugs out to an old gravel pit and shoot them with a 12ga slug. The really old round 'color picture tubes' did not have 'Integral Implosion Protection'. Man....  Those babes would make a thump and a mess when you hit one.   :Tongue_Out:

We get a ice pick, a hammer, and some safety goggles.
Put the pick on the nipple of the narrowest part of the tube, hit with the hammer and let all of the vacuum out then throw in the trash.
Our trash people don't like to hear implosions when the tub gets crushed.

[For Safety sake, bringing up a dead/archived post.]

Maybe I'm being a Nervous Nelly but is there a potential of getting hurt if you don't know what you are doing breaking a CRT?

Call your City or County! My County has a Hazardous Waste Site that takes all things we do not want to end up in a landfill.  Sometimes they take items for free, paint, oil, weed/yard chemicals, leftover fertilizer.  For some items like CRTs there is a small fee charged.

Call Best Buy!  Best Buy will take your retired electronics and recycle them.  I believe they do charge a small fee.
