Cherry 96
« on: May 06, 2017, 11:29:45 AM »
Howdy, new to the website here.  I just acquired a cherry 96 slot machine.  Got from a third person who was told that the lady that owned it, got rid of it because the monitor quit working.  Turned it on and I could hear the power supply turn on and the well known whine on the crt turning on.  I also heard the ticket dispenser cycle.  The monitor appears to have power but the picture is just gray fuzz like a channel that goes off the air late at night or used too lol.  Looking inside nothing is jumping out at me.  It does not make any other sounds or noises.  Looking for a little direction in troubleshooting.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!  Disregard the white square on the monitor in the picture, that is just a reflection of a window in my workshop.

A little more information would be necessary.
There are many kinds of monitors and they require different sync and color signals relating to what kind of machine you have.
Is the machine IGT, Bally, Sigma etc?
A picture of the computer board would be helpful.

Not sure who made the machine there's not any obvious logos on it.  I added a few more pictures.  The board looks good.  No blistering or discoloration anywhere on it.

Wow, a totally unique and unidentifiable (by me) game. Maybe someone else can chime in that knows a little more.
When in doubt the first thing I would do is replace all of the larger capacitors on the monitor board with fresh ones and see if the monitor comes up.

Have you tried cleaning all the edge connectors on the boards, check all wire harness plugs are clean and tight, confirm that power is getting to the circuit boards, etc?

Well it could be a number of reasons why the monitor is showing a gray screen so let's troubleshoot. First check the power supply and make sure it's putting out the required 5vdc. If the power supply is good we need to check the board. You want to touch pin 18 with a grounds wire and if you hear credit go on then the board is good. That would leave the monitor. You can press the socket on the control board and see what happens, those monitors are known for that problem. The game you have is a New Cherry 96 special edition by Amcoe, I put the manual in the attachment for you.

I don't believe its putting out the 5v it's bounces around low if if I'm checking it correctly.  I have a new power supply coming already that I was going to use on a old burgertime with bad power set up.  So I will try it first on the cherry before I retrofit the other one.  Thank you for your input, will have to wait and I will do an update once it's in.  I included a picture of the old power supply.
