IGT Game King topper power
« on: November 06, 2017, 09:48:19 PM »
Hi! I have a Game King built in 1998, and I just bought an IGT Catch a Wave topper, but I don't want to plug it in willy nilly.

I did try out the 6-pin (with 3 actual pins) candle connector because it's obviously connected on the top (and it works!).

There's a smaller, 4-pin connection, and my power supply has a socket on the left that connects—but does that mean it is the correct voltage/amperage? Photos attached!

Please give me a green light—or prevent me from making a horrible mistake!

I don't own a game king but I can tell you the orange wire on the topper is +25v, red +13v, black/orange & black/red grounds for each. They plug into the netplex dist board in the top on a S2000. Check the output voltage before you plug it in.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

Thanks for the information! I should probably learn the ways of the multimeter.

Well, I had a moment of weakness and plugged the topper in willy nilly. It didn't work. Oddly, plugging in the 4-pin plug activated the monitor —it came on with a dark purple hue. I saw  I hope I didn't blow out the LEDs or fluorescent light—but I probably did, huh?

My friend looked at the topper board, and the U2 voltage regulator is blown. The fluorescent bulb works, and all the LEDs work when adding voltage down the line.

He thinks the U2 could be programmed so that the lights can do an animation, but as far as he knows, the LEDs just constantly stay on. The schematic that we have is for a prototype topper, but it aligns with the LED board.

It's a Catch a Wave topper so it's from 2002—would it have done a little light show, or simply stay on all the time? Does the game MPU control the topper, or do the LEDs just do its own thing?

I had a nice video of one of these in action that I took years ago but I can't find it.  Yes, it does a little light show -- chasing in one direction, then the other, then all on/off flash, then the pattern repeats.  It does that light pattern all on its own, without any interaction or any connection to the machine, other than power.  In fact, I installed one of these toppers on an S+ machine using some wall wart power supplies to supply the juice for it, and it looked pretty sharp.

You can see some of what it looks like in this video I found on YouTube:

My friend fixed the topper's U2 voltage regulator, but it didn't do the light show—it only stayed on always: https://youtu.be/DX84ASN1vkA

I wound up buying a replacement topper board from eBay ($20 + $7 shipping), and it works great as seen in this video:

For the LEDs and the fluorescent bulb, my friend made a power supply that plugs into the inside of the machine. The candle lights plug into the machine's 6-pin (actually 3 pins) plug as usual.
