SP1271 family of game chips: Typical setup for home use.

Important: All setting changes require 0 credits on the machine before entering setup mode.

  • With the machine turned on and in idle mode, open the door press the white test button 2 times
  • You should see "2  n" in the winner paid/credits windows, where n= 0 or 1. Press the spin button until it reads "2  1"
  This enables the spin sounds.
  • Turn the jackpot key once. This advances through the setup sub-menu
  • You should see "5  n" in the window, where n= 0 to 2. Press the spin button until it reads "5  0"
This will make all wins automatically go to the credit meter. You will not have to turn on the credit button before playing.
  • Turn the jackpot key three times.
  • You should see "8  n" in the window, where n= 0 to 2. Press the spin button until it reads "8  1"
This will force all bills inserted to go to the credit meter. You will never accidentally end up cashing out your bill.

[ADDED 5-30-2011] It turns out that this setting has to be enabled when the dbv is set up using the SET chip. If the SET chip option is configured as disabled, this option can't be changed and all bills will always go to the tray. If the SET chip option is configured as enabled, then the option is set here. If enabled, a set chip is NOT required to change this setting. Thanks Poppo and Stayouttadabunker for this info.

  • Turn the jackpot key once
  • Press the white test button to "return" to the main menu and advance through it until you get to option group 7

  {stop the first time you see a "7" in the Coins-In display}
  • Set your hopper and credit limits as follows:
Note: To set these values, turn the jackpot reset key to change the selected (flashing) digit. Press the spin button to increment the flashing digit.

  • [7-1] 0000   Maximum number of credits that will actually cash out from your hopper.

Zero effectively disables the hopper, but you can use a low number to match the number of coins that you have, if you wish. If you have more credits than the value set here on the meter, pressing cash out will become a hand pay that is cleared with the key.
  • [7-2] 1200  This will cause all single wins of 1201 or more to lock up as a jackpot with lights flashing. Set this between the highest win that you want to pay out normally and the lowest win that you want to lock up as a jackpot. Jackpot wins cleared with the jp key "disappear" and are not added to the credit meter (although they are added to the jackpot meter in the bookkeeping menus.)
  • [7-3] 9999  All single wins of equal to or less than the value set in [7-2] (1200 or less in this case) will go to the credit meter as long as the final number of credits is less than 10,000.
  • [7-5] 2000  The bill validator will turn off when you have more than 2000 credits. Use any value that you want here.
  • [8]    0000  optional.  Partial pay on lockups. If you want some of your jackpot or lockup amounts to pay from the hopper, set this to the number of coins you want to pay out. This number cannot be higher than the hopper limit setting [7-1].
  • Press the white test button one final time after making your last setting change to be sure that the changes stick
  • Close the door

I received a PM recently from SolidSilver requesting that I add instructions for setting up the S  to pay all wins to the tray.
To do this, simply change option 5 in the setup sub-menu (the second option set in my original post above.)

  • You should see "5  n" in the window, where n= 0 to 2. Press the spin button until it reads "5  0"
This will make all wins automatically go to the credit meter. You will not have to turn on the credit button before playing.
  • To have the S  default to the cash option, set this to "5  1"
Both modes 1 and 2 are manual modes. Either one will allow you to turn credit play on or off before playing.

Mode 1 defaults to credit OFF after cashing out and will also turn the credit button off automatically if the you turn
credit play on but don't play for 30 seconds.

Mode 2 does the opposite. It will default to credit play and will turn credit play back on if you turn it off but don't play
                 the machine for 30 seconds.

That'sall there is to it!

Note that in mode "5  0" the cash/credit button light will always be off when there are no credits on the machine, and pressing the button will have no effect. When credits are on the machine, this button will blink to let you know that you have credits to cash out.

In modes "5  1" or "5  2" the cash/credit button light will either be off or on solid. Pressing the button with no credits or coins in play will toggle the mode. Once you've dropped a coin into the machine, you cannot change the mode until the spin is completed.

Simple enough.   However...

While SolidSilver is convinced that many or most S+ owners would prefer to play without credits, experience tells me that most will change their minds and end up going back to the original setting of "5  0".

The reason is that most people don't keep their hoppers full like the casinos did unless they choose to run fake tokens, and even then most don't fill the machine. An S+ hopper holds 2000 quarters (that's $500) or quarter-sized tokens. The first time you hit a large payout that doesn't lock up and you have to refill your hopper several times to finish the pay, you might start rethinking your choice. When you hit several close together (I'm talking 500-900 coins each, as can happen with games like 5-Times Pay) you'll really start rethinking this setting! While the S+ isn't a Bally Alpha, it isn't a Mills or Pace mechanical, either. It isn't even a Bally EM, which usually locks up at 200-400 coins.

Keep in mind that you can always choose to cash out after each win if you like in mode "5  0", although I'll admit that you lose the surprise factor when the coins hit the tray.

For those of you who insist on playing your S+ in cash mode, I strongly suggest that you set the hopper and credit limits carefully, based on the number of coins you choose to keep in your hopper. (See my post above for all those [7-n] settings.) Otherwise you'll end up opening your door again and again to refill the hopper with the coins it just paid into your tray for the nth time to finish paying out that 900 coin jackpot you've just hit twice in the last 20 minutes.

I also tend to be old-school when playing slots. I'm the stickler who actually filled his machines with quarters. I set my hopper overflow probes to about 1500 coins, had working holes and buckets in my stands and over $2,500 in quarters floating around. That was enough to use the overflow from the buckets of various machines to refill any machine that payed out enough to run dry without having to take any coins from the tray or other machines (sort of like a real jackpot hopper fill in a casino.) It also allowed my guests to play coins from any machine into any other without worrying about any of the hoppers running out of coins.

Even so, I still set my machines to auto-credit with proper lockup and limit amounts. My friends and I could always cash out any credits when we wanted to hear the sound of coins hitting the tray and to get our hands black putting them back in. :Tongue_Out: But inserting 3 or 5 coins at a time gets old after a few hours. Pressing "Max Bet" is much more convenient.

My last thought is that jackpot lockups and cashout lockups (exceeding option [7-1]) aren't nearly as much fun at home as they are in a casino. After all, there's no one to actually PAY you anything. All those credits just "go away" and you don't get to play them off.
