Universal sound eproms
« on: March 15, 2014, 09:14:52 PM »
People often tell me they remember that "Universal sound" from old t.v. shows with casino scenes.
Most folks don't realize Universal had several different variations of sound chips.
So, for the archives, here is what information I have;

First and most famous sound chip is the 0822. This was the one heard on t.v. and was installed in most 1985,86,87 machines.
There are two chip sockets on the 8116 board, 4M, and 3M. They are 24 pin, made for 2732's.
The 0822 is installed on 4M and 3M is empty.
Then Universal expanded the sound to two chips, the first chip was the Main Master, and the second was the Data.
Main Master installed in socket 4M and Data in 3M.
Here is a list of sound chips for the 8116 board;      (Bolded numbers are chips I have)

Main Master                     Data                             Specific Game          recognizable feature
8953-0001                    8953-0002                               ?

8953-0003                8953-0004
8953-0005                              several                  distinctive whoosh sound at begin of reel spin
                                  8953-0006
                                  8953-0007
                                  8953-0008

8953-0022                8953-0024 replaced by 0028
                                  8953-0025 replaced by 0029
                                  8953-0026 replaced by 0030
                               8953-0027 replaced by 0031
                                  8953-0035                              7-RUSH
                                  8953-0040
                                  8953-0041
                                  8953-0042
                                  8953-0045
                                  8953-0046
                                  8953-0047
                                  8953-0048
                                  8953-0049
                                  8953-0050

8953-0023                    8953-0024                     only for MUSTANG

The 8800 board has one 256k sound chip. This chip contains both the Main Master and Data.
The main is the 8953-0022 (sometimes modified) and the chip number is the Data number;

Chip #                            Game                                    Feature
8953-0024
8953-0025
8953-0026
8953-0027
8953-0032           Silent Service                                Reel spin is "ping-ping-ping" sonar sound
8953-0036                    7-Rush
8953-0037
8953-0038
8953-0039
8953-0043                  Carousel
8953-0044          Phantom Spin                                erie spin sound and has respin sound
8953-0050                                                            nice spin sound, reminds me of Bally's sound

Ultra slots have one 256k sound chip on the 94014 board;

94010-SND-0003                            far superior to all other Universal sounds

Sound file must be compatable to machine chip. No compatability list available that I know of??

Any other info out there, let me know!

Hi! Thanks Uniman for this great info on the sound eproms! My favorite is absolutely the 0822.  :applause:
Just bought a used *Mountain of money* stored in a shed for the last years. Was in pretty bad shape, dusty and rusty. However - got it up running. As I play the first game --- boom!!! Wrong sound !!  :hissyfit: :hissyfit: .  I see my game has the "distinctive whoosh sound" as you describe. Labels says 8953 - 05 and 8953-03.
My question is: if I remove these two and replace them with a 0822 (if I locate one out there.....) in the 4M socket as you describe, will my board accept this? Reels and front glass says year 1987. See pic.

Yes, the 0822 will work. This chip has no reel spin sound though. Of course right now you just have the "Whoosh". The 0822 should be easy to find.

Never found any info on Universal sound chip compatibility. Through trial and error years ago I found they were backwards compatible for the most part. It all depends on what "system" chip you have at position A4.
There are chip pairs with reel spin sound, one specific for the submarine game with sonar ping sound, one for a game called phantom spin (the only respin game Uni made) that had spooky reel spin sound. And more I can't remember.

No longer do I have any Universal slots, sold everything. But on an old laptop that barely boots up anymore I do have all the sound .bin files that I collected over the years.

I'm one of those fellas that when I take up a hobby I dive right into it. In my twenties it was ducking hunting. Built my own duck boat, made decoys from cork, made my own duck calls.
In my thirties and forties it was harness horse racing. First bought a horse and hired a trainer, then became a groom and learned to train my own horses. Earned my trainers license, trained a stable of my own horses (wife did most of the work) and even drove a few in county fair racing.
In 2006 I bought a broken Universal slot machine. Had a hard time getting info and help repairing it. Everybody had IGT's. Disassembled and rebuilt the machine. Bought several more and learned everything about them. Joined Joey's NLG website and found a nitch helping others. Even reversed engineered a lot of the chip code. It was learning something new and a lot of fun.
Now I moved across country and ready for something new. Yes, I do miss the machines but decided to move on.
So really I have about 13 years experience with Uni's, not a lifetime. Owned about 100-150 machines during that time!!
