Title: Help with a Universal Draw Poker machine
Post by: tommyboy1951 on May 05, 2016, 12:17:24 PM
I just picked up a Universal Draw Poker Machine. When I plug it in, i can hear it hum, but nothing comes on. Is there a repair manual out there that could help me figure out where to start. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom, and Welcome to NLG!

There are some manuals in the NLG file download area, not sure if any of them are the right one for your machine. Here is the link to the Universal download area:

http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?action=downloads;cat=25 (http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?action=downloads;cat=25)

This site is free to use for advice, suggestions and discussions, but to help support it's operating costs the download area requires some type of contribution. Many owners don't have a manual and are able to repair their machine with some help from the experienced folks here.

The hum you are hearing could be from the fluorescent lighting bulbs or ballasts, there are a few of them in the machine and they sometimes hum. To see if that is the hum you are hearing you can turn the machine off, remove the fluorescent bulb or the starter, then switch on the machine and see if the hum is gone. If so then the hum is from the fluorescent lighting. Many machines have some hum, it isn't noticeable in the noise of a casino and that's just the way they are made. If yours is objectionable there may be ways to reduce it, such as switching out the bulb, starter and ballast, in that order.

A good place to start on a dead machine that is new to you is to check all the fuses, make sure they are not blown and that they are the correct amps size. If you have a meter you can check the power supply voltages, sometimes right at the fuse is a good place. Also check the main power cord, sometimes they are unplugged inside or the power cord has broken wires inside due to getting mashed or bent.

Instead of piggy-backing your question onto this existing discussion thread it is best if you start a new discussion thread for your Universal machine topic, that way your questions will get the best attention from the folks here familiar with Universal and each discussion will stay on topic. One of the more experienced Universal machine persons here checks in often, goes by the handle of Uniman. Post a few photos of your machine to get things started.

As always, to help identify the machine it is best to post a photo or two of it. Plus the photos tend to trigger more memories and ideas, you will likely get more people interested in offering advice.

Thanks Shaggy - I guess the link I posted was for Universal Video & Reel Slot Machines, not Video Poker. That area's title says "Universal Video and Reel Games" so I thought it included Universal Video Poker games. I corrected my earlier comment.

Ha- all is ok, I re-editted my edit!    :garfield:

I do see a couple of threads about Universal video poker machines in the area 98 board that your link goes to, so you are right about there being info there. Plus there are many in this area 85 board. I wonder if all the Universal threads should be in one place? I think I'll flag them to a moderator, just in case.

There are two types of Universal poker machines. The IBM board machine and 8304 board machine.
If the machine has one board below the monitor it is the 8304.
If it has, I think, three boards, then it is the IBM board machine.

Right now I suspect you have the more common 8304 and the first thing I would do is check the power supply for the black plastic noise filter. If it has one take it out and bypass it. Then try it.
If it is the 8304 there is a tiny toggle switch on the board in front-middle. If you get the machine and monitor to come to life you can reset the RAM by pushing the toggle in while powering up. This will reset the RAM and cure a scrambled screen.

Hi rokgpsman,

I am a newbie here and just purchased a Universal Poker Machine Super 8 Ball which needs some tender loving care :-).

I tried searching the archives for user manuals and came across this link however when i click the link it tells me that I am not able to download and cannot see anything within the link.

Could you please be so kind an let me know when I can go searching for information about my Universal Poker Machine - Super 8 Ball Serial Number S 6517??

Also are you able to recommend anyone who sells spare parts for these machines?

Thank you in advance,

Regards
Anthony
