Rowe / AMI CD-100C jukebox problem
« on: December 06, 2014, 07:07:10 AM »
My son-in-law has a Rowe/AMI CD-100C jukebox.  The last few times he's used it a problem develops after the machine has been on approximately 20 minutes.  After it's warmed up, selection buttons 4, 8, & 0 do not respond when pressed.  When machine is first turned on, they work fine.  The remainder of the buttons work fine, even after machine is warm.  Songs can be selected & played, as long as buttons 4,8 & 0 are not in the selected song.  Son-in-law says he has disconnected & re-connected wire harnesses with no results.  Where do we go next?

Be sure to check the back of the computer board for cracks along the plug headers.  Rowe CD's computers are notorious for this.  They put a sheet of foam behind the pcb to help with this but by now yours is probably turning to dust.  If the juke has been stored in a damp environment you may need to clean up the connectors with a good contact cleaner with lube/rust control.  That's all the connectors, everywhere.  The connectors on the mechanism harness are the worst since they get the most vibration.  I have replaced all the header pins and all the pins in the plugs (shells) on some units.  In Texas we get a lot of corrosion issues due to the temperature change between day and night... condensation in your garage.

Here is a thought !  I have attached pictures of my AMI 100C.  First open door and look behind touch pad and you will see a printed circuit board (see picture 4)  There is also a plug to the right side in the photo.  I always do 2 things. 1 ... Use CRC electronic cleaner (spray lightly on circuit board and brush all connections with SOFT toothbrush, dab off any excess and allow to dry.  (Usually dries almost immediately)  2 ...  Pull plug on right side, spray with cleaner and push it in and out a few times to make sure it seats properly.  You may have to repeat this a few hours later.  This usually clears the problem for me, however if it does not you have to check on a "dead" or 'Cold" solder at your # 4. 8, & 0.  Unfortunately, that is a trial and error method so be sure to try the electronic cleaner first.  I think I may have some parts around so let me know if you are successful.

aneasy check is take a voltmeter and check to see if the buttons are actually working.  it may seem like a heat problem but those keyboard switches are notoriously flaky.......
