It connects the slot machine to the casino's main computer for things like player tracking so they can keep track of how along a player plays, how many slot points to award him etc. You can think of it as a network interface adapter, it puts the slot machine onto the casino's computer network.

You know those panels mounted in the slot machine where you insert a player's card? That and the Mastercom box are part of the player tracking setup. It may be used for progressive jackpots also.

What you're looking for is not easy to find (nor cheap, as I suspect you already know). There are Ticket In /Ticket Out devices, although I do not know their capability in performing what you are asking. The devices were made mainly for home slot enthusiasts, and not meant so much for larger scale operations. Perhaps there is a setting where you only allow Tockets IN?mif that is the case, players can come to Cashier, and procure tickets for which they can then insert into machines?

Here is discussion thread and advertisement for Ticket In-Ticket Out system. With it you do not need to use coins or paper money but it is an option. The deluxe version allows you to connect your slot machines to a local network and a pc thru ethernet cable. Not all slot machines are compatible or supported, check the list of machines.
