S+ bill validator after battery change
« on: November 14, 2017, 06:53:52 AM »
I haven't been on in awhile but I am hoping to get a little help.   I am working on my buddy's S+ that had a 100% dead battery.   I changed the battery,  pushed reset, closed door and turned reset key.  It is now playing correctly with coins.  Does the BV need a set chip to reactivate it?  I wasn't sure if I should look at something else first.  Do the chips have to be purchased or can I make my own with my eprom burner?

You should be able to press the white TEST button inside the machine to enter the Setup/Preferences menus. Then step thru the menus by using the jackpot reset key until you get to the bill validator setting, see if it is enabled or disabled. The actual step may depend on the SP chip in the machine, but a lot of times I think it is menu screen 9. A setting of 9-0 means disabled, 9-1 means enabled. If you find out what SP chip the machine has we can give you the exact steps to check it.

SELF TEST MODE
Pressing the self test switch “pages” forward through the self test mode.  To move through the options pages within page zero <0>, turn the jackpot reset key.  To change settings, press the Spin Reels player switch.  To increment digits in the pages following page zero, turn the jackpot reset key.

To see which SP chip is in the machine you can look at the label on the SP chip on the mpu board. Or you can have the machine tell you, just follow these steps:

I toggled through and think I found 9  which shows 9-1.   It will take a bill in but it spits it back out.   If the BV is disabled will it even take in a bill?

If it's disabled it will be just dark and won't take a bill. I'd check your BV limit and hopper limit settings.

Thanks guys for the help.  The insert bills lit up so I blew out the dust and kept trying and it takes money.  It is pretty finicky about what it will take and even a really good bill may take several tries.   What do you need to do to improve consistency?

Have you wiped down the optic and magnetic sensors inside the bill acceptor? Most mfr's tell the casino people to clean them every few hundred bills (but they usually wait until it starts acting up). Paper money can get a lot of gunk that then gets onto the inside of the bill acceptor when the bill passes thru it. Usually just use a soft cloth moistened a little with soapy water.

What model of bill acceptor is it?  (DBV, WBA, MEI, etc??)

Something else to keep in mind, if the software inside the bill acceptor is old then it may not take some of the new designed US bills. It should always take a $1, but the other bill denominations have been redone over the last several years. I think the current order of redesign is (oldest to newest): $20, $10, $50, $5, $100. So if being dirty isn't the problem you have your best chance of it working by using a $1 and then a $20, depending on the software. There should be a sticker on the bill acceptor telling you what software it has.
