Toggling Freeplay On and Off - GameMagic / GameMaker
« on: April 18, 2015, 05:11:35 PM »
Hey guys, I have a gamemagic machine that was set on freeplay. I checked out the dataCD and it's got the gamemagic software with like 9 or so games. On the disk it's labeled demo, so this is probably why? I'm not a guru on slots, so any help from some who are would be really awesome!

Thanks for any feedback given

Possibly so, on my Williams slot when I set it to DEMO mode it is freeplay, don't have to insert coins or bills to play. Any winnings do not pay coins to tray. If the cd is labeled demo then probably all of the games on it are that way. Can you get another cd from someplace?

There may be some Game Magic machine hobby groups on the internet with other owners of this machine, they might be able to help locate other game cd's.

Huh. thats probably whats going on then. Demo software. The machine, or I should say PC boots from the CD, and you can see it try to load on the screen, even with MPU removed. Windows 95...

I live in Vegas so I'd hope that the software disks should be easily obtainable... Question is for what cost.
What about torrent in this situation, that is if someone else on the site can't help...

Thanks for your feedback!

Well, you'd think you could get anything in Vegas, so you can check around.   :garfield:

I think the machine came about around 1999 or 2000, it does have a Windows 95 based computer. They were not all that popular with casinos for whatever reason so there weren't many produced (some said the graphics and speed was inferior to other machines at the time). The machines are similar to the Game Maker models in many respects, it might be possible to convert it and then you'd have those game options. Those models used normal eprom based software. But I really don't know if it would be economically feasible to do that. Did you get it from a place that possibly has game cd's available?

Since you are at the "Casino Mecca" you might be able to trade it in for a different machine if you end up not finding any software for it. There are probably lots of used slots all around you.

Can you post a picture of it, powered up and lit up, showing the entire front side? Thanks!

Yes, actually, I got the slot for free from a Ballys employee, posted on CL. She made me fill out a form to submit to the gaming board, I guess to keep track of slot sales etc. She was kinda sketchy as we left, as she had her 12yo son run out and snap photos of our licence plate.... Whatever lady. I assume she's just being cautious. The slot doors lock was definitely drilled through ... Not sure how "they" "retire" old slots.

The machine was stuck needing a SAFERAM reset, which the lady said she couldn't get reset. She looked at me like Goood Luuuuck!  Simple enough to reset this far, but then once in, I got other issues, thus far, battery, and door optics... Now this freeplay software may be an issue too. Is there any "open-source" software that may be able to be used on this machine, that possibly could make use of maybe the hopper, coin comparator, lights and touchscreen etc? I know ANYTHING's possible, but the question is to what effort!? Hope theres an easy solution maybe, or hopefully I can find someone with software.

That lady possibly could be a source, you might try asking her *nicely* if she could get you other software cd's. She got the entire machine, looks like she could maybe also get cd's for it. She might know a guy that knows a guy...... These models are considered obsolete by Bally, but there may be cd's still floating around in the company, in storage or whatever. She might be able to help, especially if all the stuff related to Game Magic is considered ancient history and no one there cares about it. Could also ask her about any manuals that may be available for it.

Have you tried looking on that demo cd to see if there is a .inf or autoexec.bat or config.sys file that maybe has a line in it setting a flag to DEMO for the game software? If so it might be possible to make a backup copy of the cd, edit that flag setting to say something else on the backup cd. This is a big longshot but is easy to check, nothing to lose. Also look for any readme or other text files that might give helpful info.

What does that demo cd look like? Is it a Bally released product, or just some cd somebody made? It's a big world out there so anything is possible but you'd be real lucky to find any open-source software for this particular machine. Slot companies keep pretty tight control on who has the hardware info that allows them to write the machine software.

Are you saying the mpu board is missing, or just that you removed it? This is the mpu from the metal tray below the screen, right?  The Win95 computer is to the right side of the screen.

PS> here's a Bally Pocket Guide that covers several models including the Game Magic.

I seen the CL ad, i was wondering when you posted if this opwas the one. GameMagic software is not easy to come by, but not impossible either. Sounds like an employee got the machine for next to nothing, or maybe nothing from Bally. IGT does giveaways to employees, so Bally may as well. More than likely, she will have no clue where or how to get software. We bought an Odyseey off an IGT employee that won it a company Xmas party and she could barely turn it on. These are big companies, it's not like they are all techs.

Googling GameMagic is not very promising from what I seen, but there are a few sites that offer manuals, etc. You may be months looking for the software, and when you least expect it, it will pop up. Your not in the machine anything, so if you have room for it, just sit on it and you will eventually find the software. Heck, even a WTB ad on here may produce something, as we have other members that have or have had Game Magics.

... thank guys for the help.

The MPU is not missing, and its in tact. The game, from what I read doesn't have game chips, nor needs a reset chip, as it was obviously done with the DSW1 array all up, power up, reports successful resets, remove board, preposition the switches, and then the software boots normally with the calibration runthru... reset was thankfully noted from a (diamond in the rough) post that someone confidently mentioned to do for the reset. Worked.

I have the demo CD removed from the slot and has a "Ballys" professionally printed logo on the CD, and hand written "10 game pack Demo".. I will need to create an iso for backup... I am looking at some of the code, and I don't see any obvious "work arounds" to mod, and I wish I knew hex editing to the point of editing the binary ... which may need to be done to toggle ?? IDK ... I just want the thing to work! :D but I guess it's all about the journey... right?

Right, it's all about the journey. Bally doesn't have a team of programming engineers in place so that you(us) can just read the program and re-write ite it as we see fit. Start searching and posting WTB ads. This site would be one of the best, as you never know what someone has stashed in a box somewhere.

Well, I'm on to someting perhaps, will have to see in the morning as others are sleeping the same room as the slot is stored... Buut I may have answered my own question ... hopefully

Upon searching for autoexec.bat and config.sys to edit (like once upon a time) ... nothing..  there were two boot bin files associated with the "boot" up of the initial executable binary, then there are a bunch of readable cfg files, that look manageable in C code, but didn't show anything promising as far as a freeplay variable...
Then I pulled out the slightly bigger guns. HEX editor, and an ISO creator / editor..

Upon sifting through the large binary, in legible ASCII data to the right, is low and behold: FREEPLAY=1   ..  Logic tells me if I edit this boolean variable (as 1=true!) to toggle FreePlay=0,  I think I could make it trick it to think FREEPLAY=FALSE.

By Golly, this just might work...

I only want to restore to the machine to a working order for testing of all components such as hopper etc, to get as close to fully functional as possible, just to say everything works fine... Then its back to freeplay for fun time!! I just want there to be a utility CD that is not freeplay, with this machine, so it is more complete.

I'll report back how it turns out...

Thanks for the offer cp, but I think I'll see how this goes first  :duh:
