Missing Barrell Key
« on: April 09, 2017, 01:14:33 PM »
I purchased an IGT Louisiana Louie about 8 years ago. I am getting an error 12 on it. I went to pull the MPU board and there is a barrel lock holding it in, and I don't have the key. There are no numbers on the lock that I can see. The funny thing is that there were no locks that came with it on the side or on the bill validator, so I had purchased some for those, and never noticed this one before needing to remove the board. The place I bought it from is no longer in business. Any help or suggestions as to what I can do?

Yuck, that stinks.  Usually machines that have a lock on the MPU tray were only wide-area progressive games (think Megabucks, or similar).

You could try obtaining a tubular lock pick set and picking it yourself.  Those kits are not terribly expensive on wish.com or other similar sites, although you may have to wait for the slow boat from China to bring it in.

You could also try drilling it out, but I'm not terribly keen on that since you'll get metal shavings all over the place on your MPU board, not to mention the possibility of damage to the board from an errant drill bit.

Before any of that, maybe consider trying the method of using an old pen -- it might just work.  There are many videos on the subject -- here's one of them:

It is one that had a 3-coin progressive. I'll try the pen trick and see what happens. Thanks...

If you haven't tried yet. Yank on the handle and see if it will pull up. If the  board is on the left side make sure there isn't a horizontal screw in the front holding it down.

I tried, but was unsuccessful. Do you know which direction that lock should turn, clockwise or counter clockwise to unlock? I looked at some of the lock picking devices online. I'm concerned they may be too long to fit in that area under there.

Can you post a photo of the lock on your mpu board enclosure?

Instead of drilling out the barrel lock, what if you drill the heads off those 2 rivets near the lock? You could put an old towel below the rivets to catch most of the metal debris, and don't drill any farther inside, just get the rivet heads removed. Then you could push the rivet body back and maybe get the mpu tray assembly out. You could then remove the barrel lock from the backside?

I ordered a lock pick for 21$. We'll see how that works out. I'd rather not have metal shavings all over in there. But if worst comes to worst, its a last resort.

Like what rokgpsman said in his last post but use a small sharp chisel to knock the heads off the rivets, then there's no shavings

Well, I feel a little dumb now. So I got the lock pick in today, finally, and tried and tried and couldn't get it to work. So I decided to just pull out a chisel and do it the old fashioned way. After I popped the rivets off, I pulled the board out, and to my surprise, there was no latch on the lock, it had been removed, and just the lock was left in. So, all this time I just wasn't pulling up hard enough. I changed the battery and got rid of the 12, and of course now I am getting the 61 error because if the bill validator. I know the bill validator in it doesn't take any of the bills that have been enhanced in the last decade. I'm not sure if it is worth upgrading it to one that does at this point. But I know I need to get the set and clear chips.

The 61 error code isn't because of the b/v. With the door open hold the test button in for a few seconds and listen to the machine for a ding. It may not make the sound but the display should change to 61-1. When that happens, close and latch the door and turn the reset key 1 time. The displays should clear and the machine should initialize and the insert coin light come on and be ready to play.

Don't worry about it, just a learning experience about your machine. Post a photo of your bill validator. It is probably a DBV-200 or possibly the older DBV-145. Both were made by a company called JCM and IGT used them on a lot of their machines from the S and S+ era. The DBV-200 has software updates available that will allow it to work with most of the new style bills in circulation now. So don't give up on getting the bv working. There are even good working used DBV-200 available for sale.

Below is what the DBV-200 looks like, on the bottom of it there is a circuit board that has a memory chip installed. This chip contains the DBV software that gets updated. If this chip is a normal eprom installed into a socket it is quite easy to replace. But sometimes the chip is soldered to the circuit board and that makes updating the software not as easy.

Post a photo of your bill validator and we can go from there. It should have a sticker on the top or side that gives information about it.

Thanks so much. I got it working again. After I reset it from the 65-3, I got a 65-1, then after I reset again it started working properly. I'm not sure if this is something that is going to come back again, but we'll see I guess.
