Universal Reel Spin Sound
« on: February 24, 2015, 03:02:32 PM »
Both of my Universal machines have the 8116 boards in them & both have no sound when the reels spin, but have all other sounds? Is this because of the sound chip used, a setting or is it just because they are the older style machine & board?
I have single sound chips 0822 & also the Sonar sounding chip (no label) both with no reel spin sound & the 2 set 8953
Thanks,
Dan

Early games had no reel spin sound. Later games did. What matters is the machine or, aka, system chip number. What games do you have?

I'll post more when I get time.

They're both Double Fortune machines
Is there a way to speed up the reel stop, as both are average/slow. I haven't found it in the manual yet if it's an available option
Thanks,
Dan

Reel speed not adjustable.

Need to know your system chip number. Open door on your machines and press the green test button 9 times. Then record the flashing numbers in the win meter. There will be five different sets of numbers, all starting with a 9. Post them.

A little more on Universal 8116 board games sound chips. Here is a piece from the old site.

People often tell me they remember that "Universal sound" from old t.v. shows with casino scenes.
Most folks don't realize Universal had several different variations of sound chips.
So, for the archives, here is what information I have;

First and most famous sound chip is the 0822. This was the one heard on t.v. and was installed in most 1985,86,87 machines.
There are two chip sockets on the 8116 board, 4M, and 3M. They are 24 pin, made for 2732's.
The 0822 is installed on 4M and 3M is empty.
Then Universal expanded the sound to two chips, the first chip was the Main Master, and the second was the Data.
Main Master installed in socket 4M and Data in 3M.
Here is a list of sound chips for the 8116 board;

Main Master                     Data                             Specific Game          recognizable feature
8953-0001                    8953-0002                               ?

8953-0003                8953-0004
8953-0005                              several                  distinctive whoosh sound at begin of reel spin
                                  8953-0006
                                  8953-0007
                                  8953-0008

8953-0022                8953-0024 replaced by 0028
                                  8953-0025 replaced by 0029
                                  8953-0026 replaced by 0030
                               8953-0027 replaced by 0031
                                  8953-0035                              7-RUSH
                                  8953-0040
                                  8953-0041
                                  8953-0042
                                  8953-0045
                                  8953-0046
                                  8953-0047
                                  8953-0048
                                  8953-0049
                                  8953-0050

8953-0023                    8953-0024                     only for MUSTANG

Most, if not all of the dual chips have some sort of reel spin sound. But, your System Chip needs to be compatable for it to work. The System Chip calls for the reel spin sound. Early System Chips did not call for reel spin sound so using a dual chip that has spin sound won't work. There is no chart on what works. I did experiment years ago and believe any System Chip starting with 89 or higher will work. Early System Chips like 8601 will not.

Ok, your system chip is 8601 and I'm pretty sure no reel spin sound no matter what sound chips you install. Your game chip, 8744-1010 is a 97.427% return chip, the best return they make. Also, Double Fortune not compatable with any other system chip, so no upgrading to get reel sound.
The 90200 is the credit limit set at 200 coins. You can increase that to 2500 by setting dips 1,2,and 3 to ON on the sub-board at location 1A. A ram clear is required after a dip setting change.

WRONG! Just found out from another poster that the 8601-0076 does support spin sound!!
What I need to know is what versions of the 8953 chips do you have? As stated in above post the 8953-0022 master is the main needed with a 8953-0024 data chip or higher.
The 8953-0022 master is in socket located at 4M

The sound chips I have for socket 4M are 0822 & the other one has no label, but is the sonar type sound & when the reels stop it sounds like rubber shoes skidding on a wet floor is the best I can describe it. I also have a 2 chip set for 3M & 4M 8953-0203 & 0204 both marked L90-0741
Thanks

I believe those are 8953-0003 and 8953-0004, not 8953-0203 and 8953-0204. I have no record that they have reel sound.
The sonar sound is for the game silent service, a submarine theme. And I believe the sonar sound requires a 8953-0022 master.

For reel sound you need a 8953-0022 master and a data chip between 8953-0023-50.

Thanks for the info & great learn. I don't think I have the correct Data chip. I love my old Universal machines & they are my favorites hands down out of my 9 personal machines & what I use to play back in the day
