Using knock out plugs to fill key hole
« on: June 19, 2017, 03:52:14 PM »
I'm not sure if this interests anyone but I thought I'd post and see. I personally don't care for locks on my machines. No use for them. I have solved this issue by installing knock out plugs into the hole where the lock goes.
I'm not too "in the know" when it comes to how to guides but I'll do my best.
You start with a 3/4" knock out plug (cheap on ebay).

Trim away 3 tabs on each side and bend down the remaining portion of the tab. Then insert the plug into the hole and bend the tabs back to secure the plug.

i have been doing that for years for the belly glass door lock (not needed for home use) - however the door lock itself - most people want a lock there.

I really have no need for it. Most of my machines have TITO's and I rarely use cash anyway. I have 1 $100 bill that I keep around for the ones that don't have a tito. Minimal loss if someone got sneaky.

On the places where I don't want a lock I just take the lock cam off the back end of the lock. There's either a nut or a single screw holding them one. Pretty simple and the lock body fills the hole, looks normal. If there was no lock on the machine when I got it I just use an old lock, even one without a key works fine for this.

I agree - don't want the grandkids putting the cat into the hopper and shutting the door.   :garfield:

Most of the machines I buy don't have locks. I think I paid .73 cents for the knock out plugs. I've also used thumb locks but they're 2-3 bucks a piece. The plugs work best for me. No grandkids here.

Just bend two legs on one side and three on the other .. then install .. then bend over four of the legs next to the bent ones on the inside of the door. Like others have said .. we have been doing the belly door with the hole plug and a lock on the main door.

It's funny when you discover something on your own and think "man, this is a great idea!". Only to find out almost everyone before you has already done it. I suppose only being into the hobby for a year or so, I will certainly run into this again. Thanks for the input from those who responded. I think I'll choose my "how to's" a bit more wisely in the future.

Still a good idea that needed to be refreshed. A lot of new members don't browse through old topics to find stuff like this and it works on all machines. Personally, I won't crap on a good idea just because I don't need to use it. Just sayin'...

I agree with cowboy, it's all about sharing something. Even if someone modifies an idea or doesn't implement it they still know about it and may be helpful down the road. I think we get new people here just about every day, some don't bother signing up but they still read and learn from what we all post.

Honestly, I was just pointing out that if you need this fix it's a good, clean fix.

Agreed. I think it looks great. Not sure if I could find them in gold tone though. 3 of my machines are gold tone. Haven't really searched yet.

Heck, even the casinos didn't have gold locks, but a purist could send them off to a place like  Coat of Chrome in PA and make it right. Personally, I like a little silver mixed in with my gold

Here are some thumb style locks I painted with rustoleum gold. Spray paint has come along way. It's held up well.

Here is another option I  use .  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BPWIJY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  .  Nice low profile fit. Looks good with black and chrome cabinets. Guess they could be painted?

These look to be gold or brass colored, hard to tell exactly from the photo:
