How can I temporarily bypass the door optics?
« on: February 14, 2016, 10:53:09 AM »
Thanks!  One quick question and then I will start a new thread with other issues.  How can I temporarily bypass the door optics?  They appear to have been rigged at one point, judging from the blue wire crammed into one side of the top optic harness.  It must have fallen out of where ever it went to in transport.  I have ordered new optics, but would like to move on and get my other issues solved.  So, if someone could point me to how to bypass the optic sensors, that would be awesome.  Also, no cherry switch that I can see on the main door.  There is one on the DBV door, that seems to be functioning.

I don't have a PE plus machine, but I think you can directly connect the wires from the door open LED to the door open detector.  See the wiring diagram on pages B7 and B8 of the manual.

Here you go...

I brightened up your photo so the details can be seen better.

Ok, now we are getting somewhere.  Anyone have a link to a PDF copy of a manual?  Also, I have some issues...  Presently the candle is blinking both red and white and the screen is displaying  Hopper malfunction, extra coin paid out and door open.  There is nothing connecting the two optic sensors so I'm guessing that is the "door open" message.  Any ideas on where I should start?

A good place to start when you first get a machine is to take a good look at the main logic board, called the "mpu" board. It has a battery that saves the financial bookkeeping data and other settings when power to the machine is turned off. Often that battery on older machines is dead, that may be what is causing the "Call Attendant" message on your screen. You also need to make sure the old battery hasn't leaked onto the board and is causing damage.

A slant-top style machine has some extra door security switches that are sensed by the machine. Sometimes one of these switches is disconnected or not latched right and can cause the "door open" message.  A lot of owners bypass some or all of the door security switches to get rid of the nuisance errors. When you lift the lid of the machine you will find the security switches inside. There are also security switches elsewhere, like on the cash can near the bill validator. On some machines the cash box is sensed by security optics instead of a switch, or both.

.....Also, no cherry switch that I can see on the main door.  There is one on the DBV door, that seems to be functioning.

Some machines don't have the typical cherry switch, they only use door optics to tell the machine that the main door is open or closed.

Will do.  Just finishing my "safety" coffee, then I'm going to go stare at it for awhile and see what more I can break :)

I'm not overly familiar with slant top machines but there are lots of good folks here that are. So just post a photo of any area on the machine you want to ask about and someone will try their best to help. Photos make it easier for us to see what you are referring to.

It looks like the machine powers up and the screen is working, that's a very good sign. There are some horizontal gray lines on the screen in the photo, not sure if that is just from the camera angle or a reflection or what. But it does look like your mpu board is working well.

I'd do a good inspection inside the machine, maybe vacuum it out and look for coins here and there. Be sure to unplug the machine when you are poking around inside. Over the years as the machine gets moved coins sometimes work their way into many hidden places. Don't want one to get dislodged at some point and short something out. Look for disconnected wires or broken switches. The coin hopper can be removed, it should just slide out. That will let you inspect it easier and also behind it in the machine. There will be a very large power transformer down there, coins have a way of getting underneath or behind it.

You may find a double-eagle gold coin someone stashed in there for safekeeping,
or a 20 year old bag of maryjane.  :odie:

Well, the original photo was a little dark for me to see details, but we are used to seeing machines that could use some cleaning, no big deal.

A lot of times when these machines come to us they haven't gotten much attention so are needing a good cleaning. I see that as a good way to get more familiar with the machine and look things over, make notes about anything questionable you want to check on. You machine may be close to 30 years old, when they are in a casino they are in continuous duty, so can be exposed to a lot of dust, hand grime and cigarette smoke.

Please see the details of my experience getting the door optics to work on my PE+.  It's in the topic "renovation successful, it plays and pays".   Short answer is that you must have the door optics functioning as designed, the MPU want to see around 30 "flashes" per second, not open nor shorted on the optic detector input.  When you activate the input test screen and close the door, a functioning door optic circuit will flash the input from "0" to "1" so rapidly (30 times per second) it looks blurry. Since I am a bit of a rookie and have only worked on my 1992 machine, others may know something different, but having a blinking signal as "door closed" is more secure than having always closed or always open.  Too easy to defeat the optics that way.

I found the second set of optics for the door, plugged them in and it started working, go figure.  Not sure why the PO tried to bypass, probably an alignment issue.  Once the door issue was solved, the extra coin payout and hopper malfunction went away.  Now, there was like 540 credits on the machine and i stupidly hit the "cash out" button.  Needless to say, I don't have 540 pickles laying around.  Anyway to cancel the payout?

The monitor take a few minutes to warm up.  lots of lines through it when its first turned on, but eventually it all settles down and is fine.  I'm sure its in need of at least a cap kit on the chassis, maybe a flyback.  I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I too made that mistake early on.  No way to cancel the payout that I found.  We ended up getting 200 quarters and refilling the hopper twice.  The machine insists on paying out, it will remember and continue until finished every time you open the door.

yes, it is a pain. Some slot owners disconnect one wire from the "Cash Out" push button switch so this doesn't happen by mistake. Otherwise kids (and adults by mistake) are always gonna press it.
