Universal ram reset help
« on: June 06, 2014, 03:40:38 PM »
Hello,

I recently bought my first Universal Co Dynamite machine copyright 1985, I had a problem with coins getting stuck and fixed that, did some fresh wiring from the previous users hack job, all wiring is right now, but when I start it up sometimes I get an error code e2 e3 e12, and sometime even ' ' -- sometimes the hopper just starts spinning (empty if course) but I can't seem to find any reset switches on the machine to clear the ram, anyone who can help it will be greatly appreciated! I'd love to get these reels spinning again!

Thanks
Sam

The Dynamite machine was pre-casino machines but I believe it used the 8116 board. (Never worked on one)
The error codes I have no idea what they are.

It looks like your board sits backwards from the casino style machines. Pull the hopper out and look at the back (half way up) on the board. There should be a small black push button, smaller than a dime and just pushes in an 1/8 of an inch. With the machine off push and hold the button in while turning on the machine. Hold the button in about three seconds and release. This clears the ram on an 8116 board.
Pretty sure it doesn't matter if hopper is plugged in or not.

May it help that it is a 8205-A board, which is slightly different in its own ways.

Thanks

I do not know the 8205-A board. But all other universal boards have a reset button(s) or small toggle that is pushed on startup and resets the ram. If you cannot find a reset post a good pic of the board and I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks for responding, so I pulled my hopper out and noticed that there is corrosion on about 5-6 compactors on the board that could be a lot of the issue, and I'll look into getting replaced on Monday. But still I have yet to find a reset switch and starting to feel that if it was a snake it would have bit me by now. Hopefully this pictures sharp enough for you.

Thanks again, especially for the speedy responses,
Sam.

Yeah, I don't see a reset either.  :Scratch-Head:
Removing and replacing the battery would clear the ram. Maybe if you added a battery holder so the battery could be pulled out and replaced or maybe add a switch to it?

It looks very similar to the 8116 board. The old battery did some minor damage I see.

Thanks for the responce, I noticed where the battery did some damage as well, I'm going to remove the board and let someone I trust with soldering more than I do...
I removed the board and cleaned the connection with 91% rubbing alcohol, and put the board back in, the errors are not there, but now it starts like it's in game mode, and says on the screen winner paid. "88" and the hopper keeps spinning, I checked the sensor in the hopper and even made sure the coins where being acknowledged, I'm first going to get the board work done, while I'm still looking for a hopper or sensor for this one.

This is my first machine I have bought doa to bring back to life, everythig seems to be going well accept for it thinking it needs to pay out, and I live in MD we don't have slot techs this way, so I appreciate any comments questions or concerns.

Thanks!
Sam

I'm leaning towards a board problem. The 88 in the win meter maybe just all led's lighting up due to a board problem. The hopper should have a micro-switch for counting coins out, no sensor. An ohm meter can tell if the switch is functioning.
I would change the battery and use a soft brass brush to remove some of that corrosion. A little vinegar could help with the corrosion. Make sure no brass brush brissels left behind. Removing and replacing the battery should clear the ram. I suspect the problems would still persist. Either component problem with board or could even be eproms have lost some of their memory.
I see the fuse area looks like it has been bypassed! A really cobbled up machine!
You should cover the round glass on the eproms labeled 1 and 2. A certain frequency of ultraviolet light erases eproms through those openings. Use a piece of elect. tape.
Normal household flouresent light would take 1000's of hours exposure to erase them, but they are old, so better safe.

I'm glad to hear from you again uniman, between you, and the great people like you and James at AZ Slots I've been fortunate into making success, yesterday I made some great improvements with it, but today I've let my mind rest for the morning.

My question to you is, should I wait on cleaning up the board? Tomorrow I'm going to reach out to an old friend and see if he is willing to do work (he's genius replacing diodes and all) Maybe if I leave it the way it is now it will be a lot easier for him to identify and replace that half dollar sized section of diodes, about 8 in all. And while he's at it I'm going to ask him to just wire an extension out for the battery so I can go home and create some kind of battery/reset relay that I could mount in the machine, trust me -- I bought this machine last week was so excited I paid the $50 and didn't look inside, so I fixed up a lot of the hack job wiring and hoped that would fix the issue, that's when errors started displaying but no hopper functionality. I'm a self thought person on everything that breaths with electric, but then I looked at the board, which slides in, there is no mount. And that's when I noticed the area of diodes that are bad, I'd rather someone more skilled do the actual work to this board, there's a better chance of it surviving due to it's "rarity" I'm not sure if it would be possible to replace it with an 8116 board?

I'll keep you posted on the board work and then the clean up. I live at the beach and one of my most popular service is water damage and data recovery. So I will treat it delicately as one of those services.

Thanks
Sam

The picture below is one of the sensor in the hopper I was referring to on my previous post.

Ah, a grey optic. You can test it by passing the arm through it with power on and a little red LED lights up on the side of it in that little pin hole.
Good luck with it, good project.

And I do not think the 8116 will work as that machine is a skill stop. Not sure the 8116 could handle skill stops.
