Fading Coin Accept Lite during repeated plays
« on: October 20, 2016, 03:03:52 PM »
Hi, 5 cent Star Special coin accept light is acting weird during play. Lights bright at start but after about 10-15 plays it fades and eventually  goes out? I cleaned all the contacts on Coin Relay, Dash Pot switch, used jumper wires with 6 volt battery and the coin accept bulb lights up just fine. After the down stroke of the coin micro switch I can jiggle the handle and the  coin accept light flutters on and off. Machine plays and pays as it should but no coin accept lite.

Hi Bill

I checked the schematic and there is only one switch which controls the coin accepted light, the coin relay switch. I suggest you make sure that the switch is making good contact (the 30 wire and the 38 wire). Also, check your light socket. Those old sockets sometimes do not make good contact with the bulb after so many years.

Add a puddle of solder to the side of the bulb. As the machine warms up the socket may be expanding loosing contact to the bulb.
No guarantee, but give it a try.

You may also want to clean the male beau plug on the reel mech for the light.   Use continuity meter to find male plug and clean to ensure it making good contact at all time.

Still no luck with light, Do you guys use a wire brush to clean the beau plug tab or fine sand paper? Since this nickel machine is 100% original from 1969 pulling the reel assembly out is pretty hard compared to my newer machines. Has anyone put a small dap of dielectric grease on the Beau Plug tabs before?

Bill,
Try something called Corrosion X. It is a spray that works great. Use it on the male and female beau plugs. Cleans the beau plugs nicely and helps ensure good contact. You can purchase it through amazon.com

To clean up the male beau plugs I use a small file with a piece of emery cloth cut to size to cover end of file.  Occasionally adjusting cloth up or down as it gets dirty.   I have never used any electric grease on plugs, not sure on that.  Usually after pulling reel mech a million times for cleaning, trouble shooting, tracing circuits and pics I wish they fit a bit more snug.

One of the better methods I've seen Jim I make a little piece igloo emery board cloth onto a piece of cardboard both sides of the cardboard I cut it into little strips I have a pair of forceps I cut part of one of the blades off of and I put it in there and then I scrub everything on All The plugs no problem I usually see is not dirt or Greece it is a tad bit of corrosion I use a 5X magnifying glass to see the corrosion

wow a lot of good information here -Thanks everyone!  I have the file and emery cloth so let me give that a try. I know if you mess up the plugs I would be screwed so I "am proceeding with caution

Hey Jon, I might give that a try with the cardboard.   Using the rigid file, I have to be careful how much pressure I apply.   I can see the cardboard backing having some give too it.
Thanks.

after using both cleaning methods that cured the lite issue, I did put a very very small dab of dielectric grease on the tips of each tab but I"am not sure if that had anything to do with the cure-Thanks for everyone's input!
