Glass, tape or no tape.
« on: December 10, 2016, 07:53:11 AM »
Any recommendations on tape to use on the outer edges of reel glass.   I have glass, two or more that have no tape.   One that I am not to keen on pulling what tape is left still on it.  It's black but doesn't look like electric tape.   I dont want to put on tape that will later lift off color from the glass.  Also, looking to get on sided black foam to replace whats on the frame glass sits in

Any thoughts?

My Bally doesn't have any tape either.  Are you seeing the old cloth based electrical tape?  It isn't smooth.  I'd be leery of lifting the paint by removing it as well!

What about applying it to the frame instead of the glass itself?

I've always used electrical tape on the reel and belly glass.

3/4 inch electrical tape works good. Adds an extra layer of protection against breakage.
Also is a safety measure against accidental cuts. Haven't come across a piece of glass that has had the edges seemed. Sanding of the edge prevents breakage and cuts.
As for the tape myself,
I would like to find the old cloth type used to hold automotive door glass into the metal frame / track.

  Sorry to chime in,  but....

By the cloth type electrical tape,  are you referring to "friction tape"?  🍷

I like Gaff tape but I wouldn't use it on glass. It's very sticky and I'm not sure if it would hurt the glass. I use Gaff tape for things like sealing around a touch screens edge and on the back of the reel readers I rebuild. I still like vinyl electrial tape for glass edges.

Friction tape, thank you.
It's on my list along with Spiral Wire Wrap.
