Title: Game King with 3902 board has speaker static
Post by: Amechanic on February 12, 2018, 09:48:23 PM
I have a 17" GK with a 3902 board that has static in the speakers. It's louder when the screen goes blank when the cards are shuffled before the deal. I have tried a different MMII Board and power supply. The machine has a Ceronix LCD Monitor. I know about the static noise on the 502 MPU used in the S2000 slots, but have not heard of this on a 3902 board. Any ideas?

PS. My base chip is M0000944.

Gary, I remember that the EPROM based 4.x games didn’t have any static, but when I moved to the SIMM based 5.x games, screen transitions and other times would produce static on my machine.  Another reason why I moved to 044 eventually.

Jason,  I just did one identical to this game a few month back and didn't have this noise. If I did, it was only 10% of this ones static noise. I'm sure others won't notice it, but to me it's not right.

Only thing I can think of off hand is another MPU...unless there was an issue with the amp/speakers.

I had thought about the MPU and speaker amp board, but I figured I'd ask. I might swap out the amp board, but to me it's happening when the MPU is under a load calculating its next card hand if that makes any sense.

If not the MML2 board, then I'd suspect the MPU board.  C59 likes to  :burningresistor: and when it does it can cause hissing, humming, and the noises when the MPU is doing things.  If it isn't burnt it could still be bad.

Does the Ceronix LCD monitor have a "brick" style power supply module, or does the monitor connect to normal 115 volt ac source? I'm wondering if noise from the monitor is getting back thru it's power supply into the sound? Or maybe the inverter on the monitor is radiating interference noise that the sound system is picking up.

The Ceronix LCD monitor is all self contained, I don't see any power bricks. It's a plug and play assembly.

Tilt, I'll have to check that out. I've changed out the cabinet PS, MMII board, and sound amp board, but the noise is still there.

Tilt,

I pulled the MPU Tray out to inspect U59. It looks good, but I did see a resistor soldered to the board that is not factory. SEE PIC.. Do you have any idea what someone was trying to fix? Could it be causing my noise, or was someone hoping to fix it with this resistor? Can I test U59 with my ESR Meter?

.... Can I test U59 with my ESR Meter?...

Do you maybe mean U50??

That resistor in normal in Rev A 3902 boards.  It was integrated into the PCB on Rev B boards.

Sure you can check it with an ESR meter if you have one.  It's a 16V 4.7uF Tantalum Cap.  C59 is on the input side of the audio voltage regulator (U50), and C69 is on the output side of it.  Might as well check it too while you're at it.

My mistake C59... Tilt say C59 could be my possible problem. It's in the picture right next to the plug for the MMII Board.

Both C59 and C69 check good with my ESR Meter. Could my noise just be caused by the REV A boards?

I don't believe so.  I've never noticed any difference between the two in the audio.  Have you tried a different MPU board?

No I have not.. I'm not sure if I have another one to test with.

Ok.  I think you've pretty much eliminated everything else, so if you find one you may want to give it a try.

Pretty much.. Swapped Amp Board, MMII Board, cabinet Power supply. Maybe I'm just being too picky, but it's working great with the exception for the static noise in the background in the speakers.

Gary, can you post up a video?  We might be able to detmerine if it’s normal static or something out of the ordinary.

Jason,
It's not very loud, but this is the 4th one of these I've built out in the past few months, and the only one that's  loud enough that's annoying. It's loudest when the screen is blank of cards when the games shuffling. I'll have to see if I can capture the noise on a cell phone video.

Were you able to find a fix?  My 3802 with wing style speakers has the same noise and is most prominent when the machine is “thinking”.

No I didn't. I think mine must be with the MPU. I don't currently have a spare 3902 board to try in the game.
